He thought Friday could not get here soon enough as he removed his boots, put his legs on the bed, and watched the weather forecast.

The following day, he returned to work and finished the designs for the vacation home. He emailed them to the client and grinned when the phone rang.

“How’s it look?” he asked the caller.

“You’re too damn good, Brett.”

“I’m glad you approve. Let me know if you need anything.”

“Definitely. Talk soon.”

Brett disconnected, then continued working.

An hour later, he stood, placed his hands against the small of his back, arched, and stretched to get the kinks out. Then he left the office, walked to his bedroom, and entered the bathroom to shower. After that, he planned to head to the diner and grab a burger.

Early Friday evening, JoJo sighed as she stood before her closet and moved the clothing along the rod. She wasn’t sure what to wear tonight.

“You should have done this sooner rather than wait until the last minute.” She stopped at the blue dress and smiled. “This will work.”

She rarely wore dresses unless she went somewhere special, and tonight was special.

Pulling the dress off the rack, she pushed the door closed. Then she held the dress up and stared into the mirror on the door.

“You will definitely work,” she said with a smile.

She placed the dress on the bed, opened the closet again to find a pair of shoes, and picked up the blue wedge sandals.

Glancing at the clock, she saw it was three, and her nerves got worse with each hour that passed. She hadn’t been on an actual date in months, but wanted to look good for Brett.

Once JoJo showered, she’d relax until he picked her up.

“Relax, hell. Who can relax?”

When her cellphone vibrated from the nightstand, she almost jumped out of her skin. She hoped it wasn’t Brett calling to cancel.

She picked it up to see her mother’s number and answered.

“Hi, Mom.”

“Hello, JoJo. Are you coming over for your dad’s birthday tomorrow?”

“I plan to. I have his gift. I have to wrap it, but I’ll do that before I get there. It’s not every day he’ll turn sixty.”

“That’s true.” Joanna Flynn laughed.

They talked for a while when JoJo noticed the time.

“I’m sorry, Mom, but I have to go. I’m going out tonight.”

“That’s nice, honey. Are you going with friends?”

“Uh, no. I… have a date.”

“A date? Oh, honey, how wonderful. Maybe you’ll forget how Rich scared you once you get back out there.”

“I already have, Mom. Brett’s new in town.”
