“Then come on, Brett. You can stay with us until you find a place.”

Brett chuckled. “I don’t think so. You already have a houseful. Maybe I’ll make a trip to look around first. I can work from anywhere in the state.”

“Yeah, you can. How’s the architect business going?”

“Great. I’m working on a two-million-dollar…vacationhome.”

“Damn. Two mill for a vacation home.” Riley chuckled. “Let me know when you’ll be here.”

“I will. I hope to see you soon, Riley. Tell Katie I said hello and kiss those kids for me. I’ll call you soon.” Brett disconnected, tossed the phone onto the sofa cushion, and smiled. Maybe things were looking up.

JoJo Flynn expelled a breath, ruffling her bangs. She was hustling today. Since Katherine quit and Courtney and Nancy were ill, JoJo couldn’t catch a break.

“JoJo, let me help you,” Sloane James exclaimed as she hurried toward her to take pies from her.

“Thanks, Sloane. I nearly dropped one of the apple pies.

Sloane inhaled sharply. “Holt would have a fit.”

JoJo chuckled, and Sloane joined in. Since Sloane began the bakery a few years ago, she’d been selling Connie’s pies. Everyone in the shop knew how Sloane’s husband Holt favored the pies—especially the apple.

“Knowing Connie, she’d make him another one. He is spoiled.

“You are not saying anything I don’t already know, JoJo.” Sloane snickered. “He accused me of causing him to gain a few pounds.”

I have to remind myself daily to avoid sweets when I come here and smell everything baking.

“I’m sorry, it’s just us.” Sloane patted her back.

“It’s okay. We got this. Shoppers know to take a ticket now. We’ll manage.”

“You’re right. People get sick, and I’d rather they stay home and not bring their germs in here. I hope Nancy and Courtney feel better soon, though. It would have been great if there was only one out, but that’s not how life goes. I should hire another person for the front since Katherine quit.”

“You should, since one of you has to work with me if it gets busy and takes you away from the kitchen. I guess I’ll call Courtney and Nancy tonight to check on them. I haven’t seen Nevada, so I haven’t asked him how Courtney is.”

The bell above the entrance chimed, and both women sighed.

“You store the pies away. I’ll get this,” Sloane uttered with a smile.

“I won’t argue with you.” JoJo placed the bags on one of the metal tables, took out the pies, and put them in the fridge.

She heard Sloane’s laughter and wondered who was out there. She moved to the archway, looked out, and saw Lydia Griffin.

“Hi, Lydia,” JoJo said as she walked out.

“JoJo, how are you?” Lydia asked her.

“Great. How about you and Colson?”

“We’re terrific. I’m getting together with a client in a few minutes, and I thought I’d sweeten him with some chocolate chip cookies.”

“A substantial client?” Sloane asked as she bagged up the cookies.

“Yes. I have several pieces of real estate to show him, all close to a million.

“Wow,” Sloane exclaimed.
