“I know.” Lydia glanced at her watch. “Oh, I have to set out. He’ll be at the office in roughly fifteen minutes.” She paid for the cookies, grabbed the bag, grinned, then left.

“A million?” JoJo uttered.

“You could come up with the money for that, right? I mean, I pay you very well.” Sloane chuckled.

“Oh, without a doubt. I’ll just send them a check.” JoJo laughed, then noticed Sloane looking at her.

“Are you doing better now?”

JoJo realized what she meant and nodded.

“I haven’t heard from him.” She shrugged.

“I know he scared you.”

“Yes, but honestly, I’m fine. It’s been over a year.”

“All right. I remember how you were for a bit after you broke up with him.”

JoJo shrugged nonchalantly. “I couldn’t take his jealousy; he was too clingy and possessive. He had a fit anytime I went out without him.”

“Yeah, that was a little too scary. You’ll find a good man one day.”

“Maybe I’ll latch onto the man buying a house close to a million dollars, but with my luck, he’s short, bald, and his age is considerably higher than his bank account.”

“You never know. I’d best return to the coffee cakes while we’re not busy.

JoJo sat on the sofa that evening, aiming the remote at the TV, flipping through channels. Nothing grabbed her attention.

She’d been so disheartened recently and didn’t understand why. Everything seemed to go wrong for her since she broke up with Rich. She shook her head. She didn’t think she’d ever been that afraid.

She was twenty-seven and hoped to have kids. She loved children and wanted to have a few one day, but even though she wasn’t old, she wanted to be young enough to spend time with them, doing the things kids love. She knew she’d find someone someday, hoping it was soon.

With a heavy sigh, she pushed to her feet and headed for the shower. It wasn’t late, but she was exhausted. Courtney and Nancy had been suffering from the flu for a week, and JoJo hoped they were feeling better. It was great that tomorrow was Sunday because she needed a restful day.

As she stepped into her bedroom, she undressed and pulled her cellphone out of the pocket of her jeans. If it were not too late when she finished her shower, she’d call Courtney.

After her shower, she dried her hair, dressed in sweatpants and a T-shirt, lifted her phone from the counter, and moved towards the living room.

She flopped onto the sofa, thumbed through her contacts on her phone, and pressedSendto call Courtney. If Courtney didn’t answer, she’d contact Nevada. JoJo prayed it wasn’t too late. People slept because of being sick, which was the best thing for them.

“Shelton.”

“Nevada?”

“Yes, ma’am. How are you, JoJo?”

“I’m doing well, thank you. Is Courtney doing better?

His weary breath came across the phone.

“No. I’m taking her to her physician tomorrow.”

“Oh, no. I was expecting to hear she was better.

“She should have seen a doctor days ago, but she’s stubborn and said she’d get through it. Well, tomorrow, she doesn’t have a choice. If I have to put her in the truck myself, she is going to the doctor.”

“That’s a good idea. I’m concerned about her. Could you mention to her I called, and she can get in touch with me when she’s feeling better?”
