“I am.”

“Did Brett tell you we invited him to dinner?”

JoJo turned to look at her.

“No.”

“Yep, and he asked if he could bring someone. Nevada told him yes, and you knew where we lived.”

JoJo giggled. “I’m eager to see if he mentions it.”

“I bet he will. Nevada likes him, and he’s always cautious with new people.”

“I would be too.”

“He just wants to be sure people are friendly toward him for him, not his money.”

“I understand. I think Brett has a good bit too. I’ve never asked, and I won’t, but he has a beautiful place. Of course, he could be mortgaged to the hilt.” JoJo grinned.

“That’s true.” Courtney smiled. “Why isn’t he involved with someone? I mean, a man who looks like that.”

“He’s divorced. We haven’t talked about each other yet, but I want to. If we keep seeing each other, we need to talk about things.”

“Definitely. Nevada and I did. I wanted to know about the woman before me and to make sure he still didn’t have feelings for her.”

“Obviously, he didn’t.”

“Nope.” Courtney sighed. “I’d better get back to the kitchen.”

“Okay. Hey, if you and Nevada aren’t busy tonight, come to Dewey’s.”

“I’ll talk to Nevada about it. I’d love to go. We haven’t been out in forever.”

JoJo nodded and picked up trays to carry to the front. They’d open soon, and the bakery would get busy once they did. That was fine with her. It would make the day go faster, and then she’d go home to get ready to go out with Brett.

At six-thirty that evening, Brett strode through the parking lot, heading for JoJo’s apartment.

He jogged up the steps, walked to her door, and knocked. When it opened, he wanted to hit his knees—pure country girl. She had her hair in a ponytail. Her red blouse emphasized her breasts, and her jeans hugged her.

“You look beautiful,” he said.

“I’m only wearing jeans and a blouse.” She smiled.

“And you wear it well. Are you ready?”

“I am. Let me grab my purse. Come in.” She turned from the door.

“I’ll wait here.”

“All right. I’m ready.” She stepped into the stairwell, closed the door, and locked it.

Brett took her hand and led her down the steps to his Tahoe. He opened the passenger door for her, and she slid onto the seat. He shoved the door closed, strode around the vehicle, opened his door, and climbed inside. He glanced over at her, smiled, and started the SUV. They rode to the restaurant in silence.

He drove into a parking spot at the diner, shut the SUV off, opened his door, and stepped out. He started around the truck, but JoJo was already out.

“I could have gotten that for you.”
