“I can open a door, Brett.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Retaking her hand, he led her to the door, opened it, then nodded for her to enter. The bell above the door jingled, and some patrons waved or called out to them.

“They don’t even know who I am,” Brett said with a chuckle as they sat at the counter.

“Oh, please. You’ve been here long enough for them to know just about everything about you.”

“That’s comforting,” he muttered.

JoJo laughed. “You’ll get used to it. Trust me. They mean no harm. You’re accepted if they’re waving or calling out to you.”

“There’s only one person in Clifton I want accepting me, and I’m looking at her.”

“I do, or I wouldn’t be here.” She sighed. “There’s going to come a time when we need to talk, Brett.”

“Yeah, I knew that was coming.” He ran his hand around the nape of his neck.

“If we continue to see each other—”

“If?We will if I have anything to say about it. I know we need to talk, and we will.”

“Soon.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

JoJo chuckled as she cupped his cheek in her hand.

“You’re not going to the guillotine.”

“Feels like it. Women have to know everything.”

“Excuse me? Don’t you think we should know about each other? I want to know all I can about you, Brett. As a child and a man. Your family. All of it. Every couple needs to be honest if they hope to be together. Aren’t you curious about my past lovers?”

“Lovers?As in, how many?”

“That is none of your business, Brett, but I’m happy to discuss it. If you can’t tell me why you’re divorced, then maybe we should stop this now.”

He turned to look at her and narrowed his eyes.

“Is that an ultimatum?”

Her eyebrows rose. “I’m stating a fact.”

Brett clenched his jaw and faced the counter. He should have known. Not that he didn’t want to tell her about Diane. He was hoping to wait a while. He heaved a sigh.

“I’m sorry. You’re right. It wasn’t a good time in my life.”

She placed her hand on his thigh.

“Brett, I get that. I’ve been there too, but I don’t want any surprises.”

“Surprises?”

She shrugged. “Yes. What if you and your wife—”

“Ex-wife, and don’t even think that for a second. It’s over, and it has been for two years. I have no desire whatsoever to even speak to her again.”
