Chapter Six

JoJo stood beside the passenger door of the Tahoe while Brett opened it. She stepped onto the running board and turned to look at him. Smiling, she cupped his lightly whiskered cheeks, leaned close, and pressed her lips to his. She moaned when he wrapped his arms around her waist, pulled her close, and deepened the kiss. His lips slowly lifted from hers.

“I’m sorry, JoJo.”

“About what?” She pulled back from him and frowned.

“Our conversation in there.”

“It’s over, Brett. Don’t worry about it. We’ll disagree from time to time.”

“As long as it’s fun making up.”

She kissed his lips, then raised them and gazed into his eyes.

“It will be. I can promise you that.”

“Hell,” he muttered, and she grinned.

An hour later, they sat at the bar in Dewey’s. JoJo gave Scarlett her purse, and then they ordered drinks. She glanced around the bar to see it packed, as usual, on a Saturday.

“Is it always like this?” Brett said close to her ear so she could hear him over the music the band was playing.

“Yes. Saturday nights are crazy. Someone suggested that Scarlett needed to expand. I don’t know if that will ever happen, but it packs them in.”

“It’s a great place.”

“I don’t get here as often as I like. Rich hated this bar.”

“Why?”

JoJo shook her head. “He didn’t like the cowboys coming on to me.”

“I can understand that, but if you let them know you weren’t alone, they’d leave you alone, right?”

“I tried to tell him that. I also said they couldn’t possibly know we were together just because we sat at the bar beside each other.” She sighed. “He was extremely jealous.”

“A little jealousy hurts no one, but you can’t let it get to you.” Brett shrugged. “It will only go as far as you allow it. Hell, I’m not too fond of the idea of a man talking to you, but I have to trust you. I know we haven’t seen each other very long, but I’m hoping we continue to do so.”

JoJo placed her hand on his thigh.

“I do too. I know most of them here are only looking for a good time, and if a woman’s willing, that’s their decision.”

The band playedUnchained Melody, a song by the Righteous Brothers.

“Would you like to dance?” Brett asked her.

“I would.” She hopped off the stool.

Brett got to his feet, put his hand out for her, then led her to the dance floor, and she turned into his arms.

“I love this song. It’s beautiful.”

“Yes, it is. My mom loves it. That’s how I know it. I am surprised the band is playing it in a cowboy bar.”

“I’m sure someone requested it, but almost every bar plays it. It was in the movieGhostwith Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze, but it’s from the sixties. That movie brought a new generation into loving it.”

“I’ve never seen the movie.”
