“All right.” She turned to face the counter.

Brett knew she wasn’t happy with that, but it was the truth.

“We’ll talk later. I promise.”

“Okay.”

“I don’t want to ruin tonight.” He touched her ponytail.

“I don’t either. I didn’t mean to jump on you, but we need to learn about each other. I want to know all I can about you and your family too. I’d love for you to meet mine one day.”

“I’d like that.” Brett smiled. “Was that our first fight?”

“That was a small spat. You don’t want to fight with me.”

“Hell, if that was just a spat, I’m too afraid to fight with you.”

JoJo laughed. “I do not back down.”

“Good. I like a woman who can hold her own.”

“JoJo.”

“Hi, Lanie. You’re here late.”

“Trent had to make a trip to Butte, so I didn’t want to be home alone.”

“This is Brett Watkins. He moved here recently. Brett, this is Lanie Donovan.”

“Lanie, it’s nice to meet you,” Brett said, as he put his hand out for her to shake.

“Nice to meet you, Brett. I hope you like Clifton.” Lanie smiled at him.

Brett smiled. “I do.”

Lanie Donavan was another pretty woman. He thought she looked familiar, though.

After placing their orders, Lanie walked to the open window between the kitchen and counter, pinned the order to a metal wheel, and spun it.

“She looks familiar, but I’ve never met her.”

“She’s Sloane’s cousin.”

He nodded. “That’s it.”

“Both of her sisters work here once in a while too. Deidra and Rissa.”

“I haven’t been in here enough to meet them, I guess.”

A few minutes later, Lanie set their dinners on the counter, smiled, and walked to another patron.

Brett picked up his burger, took a bite, and groaned. JoJo chuckled.

“They’re so good, aren’t they?”

“Best burgers I’ve ever had.”

After dinner, Brett left a tip for Lanie, paid for the order, and took JoJo’s hand. He couldn’t seem to stop touching her.
