“Yes, ma’am. Sweet tea is fine.”

“I’ll get that right away and get Owen started on your lunches.”

“Thank you, Connie.” JoJo smiled and watched Connie walk into the kitchen.

“I want to see you this weekend, JoJo.”

“I’d like that.”

They stared into each other’s eyes until another server set ice water down, startling them. Brett winked, making JoJo laugh, then he did when she did the same.

JoJo meant a lot to him, and he knew she had feelings for him, but were they rushing this? They’ve only been seeing each other briefly, but how long does it take to know you want to be with someone? Hell, maybe he fell in love too quickly. He fell for Diane the minute he met her, and look how that turned out.

As he watched JoJo smiling at patrons, he knew it would be different with her. She was so down to earth. A country girl, and he was falling fast, but he wanted to see where it would go.

They enjoyed their lunches, laughing and talking about everything. Brett loved the way her mind worked. She was as smart as a whip and gave as good as she got in and out of bed. He’d let this run and hoped it went in the right direction.

JoJo watched Brett looking around and smiled as Connie placed the check on the table and walked off.

“What’s wrong?”

His eyes shifted back to her.

“Not a thing. I love this town.”

“It grows on people.”

His eyes met hers. “It’s not the town growing on me.”

The heat rose in her cheeks, but she smiled.

“What would it be, then?” She tilted her head.

Brett chuckled. “Are you ready to get out of here?”

“Yes, if you are.” JoJo slid from the booth.

Brett got to his feet, placed a tip on the table, picked up the check, and put his hand out to her. She smiled, placed her hand in his, and slid from the booth. They walked to the cash register, and Brett handed his credit card to Connie. JoJo stood beside him and glanced around. She loved this town too, and the man beside her.

“Thank you, Connie.” Brett signed the receipt and handed it back to her.

He took JoJo’s hand and led her outside. Then they crossed the street, returned to the bakery, and stopped at the entrance.

“You don’t have to go inside.”

“All right. I’ll call you later, JoJo.” He kissed her lips, touched the brim of his hat, and jogged across the street.

Before entering the bakery, JoJo watched him open the door of his truck, climb in, start it, pull onto the street, and drive away.

She sighed as she opened the door and entered the shop to see a line of people. She stepped around them, entered the kitchen, and went to Sloane’s office to put her purse in the safe.

After entering the kitchen, she pulled her apron on and headed back to the front, but Sloane stopped her.

“Hey, are you okay?” Sloane asked her.

“Yes. I’m wondering where this is going to go with Brett.”
