He shook their hands. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“You too, son,” Joseph Flynn said as he shook Brett’s hand.

“Are you hungry, Brett?” Joanna asked him.

“Yes, ma’am, but I have a feeling I won’t be able to move later.”

“We’ll go to Dewey’s later and work it out on the dance floor.” JoJo grinned.

“Looking forward to it.” He smiled.

“Let’s head for the living room. JoJo, you and your mother, let us know if you need help. Brett and I are going to get acquainted.”

JoJo looked at Brett and almost laughed. The look on his face was priceless. Her dad wanted to talk, but Brett looked like he was heading for the gallows.

Brett followed Joseph to the living room. It was a beautiful home. When Joseph nodded for him to sit, he sat on the sofa and rubbed his sweaty palms on his thighs. He didn’t remember being this nervous when he met Diane’s parents. He watched as Liam strode to a chair and took a seat. He didn’t say a word. He stared at Brett, no doubt trying to intimidate him, and damn, it worked.

Liam was as tall as him and built about the same, but he had an icy stare. Brett would never want to cross him.

“Tell me about yourself, son.” Joseph picked up the remote for the TV and turned down the volume.

“Yes, sir. I’m an architect and a pilot, but I don’t fly as much as I’d like.”

“Why is that?”

Brett explained his work with Riley and why he moved back to Montana.

“Divorced, huh?”

“Uh, yes, sir.”

“Call me Joseph. I don’t need that, sir shit.”

Brett tried not to grin, but he couldn’t help it. JoJo warned him.

As they sat there talking, Brett discovered he liked Joseph Flynn. He was a down-to-earth man who said what he thought. Brett respected him for telling him he’d better not hurt his daughter.

“I’m going to do my best not to.”

Joseph nodded. “Good. That’s all I can ask. I might not be a young man, but her big brother wouldn’t be happy with you either.” He glanced at Liam and then back at Brett.

“I understand. Mr. Flynn—”

“Joseph.”

“Joseph. I’m going to be honest here. I’m crazy about your daughter, and the last thing I want to do is hurt her so much she’d never want to see me again.”

Joseph stared at him, and Brett met his eyes. He must have seen something, because he nodded.

“How about a beer?”

“I’d love one, but I can get them. You sit tight.” Brett stood and walked to the kitchen.

He frowned when JoJo and her mother quit talking when he entered. JoJo batted her eyelashes at him. He shook his head and smirked.Women.

Later, Brett sat at a picnic table on the back porch with a plate of food in front of him. Fried chicken, macaroni salad, and potato salad. How in the hell was he supposed to eat all of that? He picked up his beer bottle and took a long pull on it. It was hotter than hell today, but he was enjoying himself.
