“We’d ask you to join us, but we just finished.” Wyatt shrugged his shoulder.

“It’s fine. Where’s Caleb?”

“He’s with Emma and Gabe.”

“We love him, but being alone occasionally is nice.” Liv smiled.

“We’d better get going, sweetheart. I want to pick up some tack.” Wyatt stuck his hand out to Brett again. “It was nice meeting you, Brett.”

“You too. Enjoy your evening.”

Liv linked her arm through Wyatt’s and winked.

“Oh, we plan on it.”

“Not asking. I know you’d tell me.” JoJo grinned.

“I have nothing to hide. Come on, cowboy, let’s get done in town and head home.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Wyatt smiled, and they walked to the counter together.

JoJo and Brett resumed their seats while Wyatt paid the bill, then he and Liv walked out.

“She’s a character.”

“That woman has one hell of a potty mouth, but we all love her.”

“Wyatt must if she flirts in front of him.” Brett picked up his water and took a sip.

“She has always been like that. You should see her around Sam. She flirts with him constantly, and it was worse when he delivered her baby.” JoJo laughed.

“Poor Sam.”

“I heard she even flirted with him then.” JoJo giggled when Brett shook his head.

After they gave their orders to Rissa, JoJo picked up her tea and sipped it. She changed her mind and had a burger.

Once finished, they walked out to the Tahoe, got inside, and drove to Dewey’s. As usual, the parking lot was full.

JoJo sat up and stared out of the windshield but didn’t see a space, so Brett drove around to the back and parked. Then they made their way to the front and entered the bar.

Chapter Nine

When November rolled in, it was bitterly cold and snowing. Thanksgiving was in three weeks, and Brett wanted to take JoJo to Helena to meet his parents, but he wasn’t sure she’d go. Shaking his head, he knew there was only one way to find out.

He never asked her about moving in again. He’d leave it up to her; if she needed time, he’d give it to her. But he wanted this relationship to move forward. He was deeply in love with her.

It might be November, but he was sweating his ass off working in the barn. He’d bought more horses and knew he’d need help around the ranch. Once he finished, he would go to town and check out the corkboard at the Feed Store, then check with Sam about any names he found.

Later, he drove to the Feed Store, pulled into the lot, and parked. He entered the store to see many people milling about. He turned to look at the board, wrote several names, and got some feed while there.

Once they loaded his truck, he drove to the Sheriff’s Department and headed inside. He stopped in the lobby to look at the glass case on the wall to see where he needed to go.

As he strode down the hall, he glanced around. Small town at its best, he thought as he walked past photos and plaques on the wall. He stopped at one and chuckled when he saw a man holding a rifle, standing beside a dog.

Brett read the plaque under it, stating the man had been mayor fifty years ago and loved hunting. As Brett looked at the other photos, he noticed only a few wore suits or dresses. The others wore jeans, cowboy hats, boots, and button-up shirts.

He grinned, then walked to the door with the frosted glass, and Sheriff’s Department scrolled on it with Sam’s name below it.
