Brett opened the door and sauntered to the counter. A woman sat behind it but didn’t look up. He tilted his head to see her working on a crossword puzzle, so he cleared his throat and got a look that should have dropped him from where he stood.

“Hello, is Sam available?”

“Who are you?”

“Brett Watkins, ma’am.” He touched the brim of his hat.

“Is he expecting you?”

“No, ma’am. I wanted to ask him—”

“Sam!” she shouted, making him grimace.

“Betty Lou,” Sam Garrett snapped as he entered the lobby. “Use the damn intercom.”

“I don’t like the intercom, and stop swearing, Sam Garrett. This guy’s here to see you.”

Brett turned his head, so they didn’t see him grin, then turned to face Sam.

“Brett?”

“Hey, Sam.” He shook his hand.

“Riley told me you moved here. Welcome to Clifton.” Sam grinned. “What can I do for you?”

“I have a few names I’d like to run by you. I need to hire a few people.”

“Sure. Come to my office. Betty Lou, hold my calls unless it’s Tessa or an emergency.”

“Yes, sir.” She saluted, and Brett saw Sam shake his head as he followed him into an office.

“Take a seat.” Sam walked around the old oak desk and sat. “Let me see those names.”

“I hate to bother you with it, but I don’t know too many people yet, and Nevada said he had asked you.” Brett handed him a slip of paper.

“Yes, he did. It’s no problem. Several people have done this.” Sam took the list from Brett.

Brett glanced around the office while Sam read over the names, then he placed the paper on his desk.

“How many are you looking to hire?”

“Three, maybe four. I bought a few horses and get busy, so I need help.”

“We all do on a ranch.” Sam slid the paper back to him. “Top three are the best. They worked at a big horse ranch outside of town, but it went through foreclosure. I would recommend them to anyone. They’re good men and workers. Seth Jenkins was the manager, so he knows his way around.”

“The other two worked with him?”

“Yes. It would benefit any ranch to hire all three.”

Brett stood and stuck his hand out to Sam. He got to his feet and shook Brett’s hand.

“Thanks, Sam. I’ll call them.”

“No prob—”

“Sam!”

Brett watched Sam clench his jaw, close his eyes, huff, and look at him.
