“Alex…”

“Dylan? What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Alex holstered his weapon.

“I brought you some coffee.” She held a thermos out to him.

“Are you kidding me?” He removed his hat, raked his fingers through his hair, and stared at her.“Are you fucking kidding me?”

“It’s so cold—”

“Just stop.” He sighed, took the thermos, and set it on the ground. “Where’s your truck?”

“I rode my horse. I tied her at the fence.” She pointed toward the east fence and let out a little squeal when Alex grasped her elbow, and led her through the woods. She tried to jerk her arm from him, but he held on tight. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“Taking you to your horse. Then I’m going to make sure you get your ass in the saddle, and yougo home.”

Dylan jerked her arm from him, put her hands on her hips, and glared at him. At least, he thought she glared since he couldn’t see her very well.

“I only brought you coffee,” she snapped.

“And you could have been shot doing it. What the hell is wrong with you? Do you even have a clue as to how dangerous this is?”

“It’s my land and my bulls,” she snarled.

“The rustlers do not care,” he said between clenched teeth. “They will shoot you where you stand if you get in their way.”

“You’re here.”

“Because it’s my job. How many times do we have to go over this before you get it through that thick skull of yours that you do not belong out here. You could get hurt or worse. Damn it, Dylan.” He turned from her, put his hat on, placed his hands on his hips, and hung his head.

“Alex, I’m sorry. I’ll leave. I won’t come back.”

He raised his head and looked at her.

“Please don’t. I can’t have you getting hurt. It would kill me to see something happen to you. Just go home, and stay there, please. Let me do my job.”

“All right. I just thought since it was so cold…”

“I’m fine, Dylan. I’ve done this hundreds of times. Just because you sit and wait, doesn’t mean you can’t get hurt. They could be out there, watching.”

“I’m sorry.” She sniffled.

Alex sighed, walked toward her, and pulled her into his arms.

“It’s all right. Just please, don’t do this again.”

“I won’t. Not unless I ask you first.”

He stepped back from her and narrowed his eyes.

“Don’t bother. The answer will always be no. Go home, Dylan. Now.”

“Fine. I’ll go. You don’t have to escort me.”

“Someone needs to. I’m going to make sure you actually leave.”

“Whatever.” She turned and marched off into the woods.

Alex placed his hands on his hips, hung his head, and sighed.
