“Lord, save me from hardheaded women,” he muttered, then followed her.

Dylan made her way to her horse. She just wanted to make sure he was warm. It was so cold tonight. She mentally shook her head. The cold had nothing to do with why she came up here. She wanted to see him to apologize.

She stopped beside her horse but didn’t mount up. She turned to head back to him but bumped into him. She hadn’t realized he’d followed her.

“Did you follow me to make sure I’m leaving?” she snapped.

“You’re damn right I did. What the hell are you doing here anyway? After the way we parted, I was sure I’d never see you again until I had to.”

“Excuse me? Until you…hadto? What the fuck, Reeves? Do you hate me that much?”

“I don’t hate you at all. It would be so much easier if I did, but you were pissed when I said we shouldn’t see each other.”

Dylan clenched her fists, glared at him, and clenched her teeth.

“I came here to apologize.”

“For what?”

“The way we… ended things. After talking with Marlowe and Peyton, they made me see you were right. Until this case is over, we need to stay away from each other.”

“You could have called instead of making this asinine trip here,in the dark, to apologize.” His hands went to hips and she knew he was pissed. But so was she.

She put her hands against his chest and pushed, making him step back.

“You know what,Agent Reeves? I take my apology back. You do your job and when you…haveto talk to me, call me. I don’t want to see you again.” She mounted her horse.

“That’s funny. I don’t remember hearing an apology.”

“And you never will now.” She spurred her horse and ran it back to the house. If she ever saw Alexander Reeves again, it would be too soon.

Tears blurred her eyes as she rode the horse into the barn. What a stupid idea to ride up there to apologize.

“It wasn’t just the apology. You wanted to see him because the thought of not seeing him makes your heart ache. Damn him.” She shook her head.“Asinine?I am not stupid or foolish. How dare he say that? Well, you just stay away from me from now on, Reeves, and I’ll stay away from you.”

After cooling the horse, she strode from the barn, entered the house, and sighed at the warmer air in the kitchen. It was late March now, but it was still chilly at night and in the mornings. She loved winter, but she was so ready for spring.

As she made her way along the hallway to head for her bedroom, she stopped when she thought she heard a vehicle. Would the rustlers come this close to the house? She crept to the kitchen, peered out the window in the door, and gasped when she saw

Alex stepping from his truck. He glanced around, and walked up the steps. He raised his hand to knock, and she opened the door.

“What are you doing here?”

“We need to talk,” he said as he pushed past her and entered the kitchen.

“Gee, come on in,” she said with sarcasm.

He turned to look at her and she drowned in those dark eyes. He was just so handsome, but he didn’t want her.

“Dylan, look, I like you. Probably way more than I should, but I have to do my job. I know I hurt you when I said we shouldn’t see each other, but trust me, it is the last thing I want. I want to get to know you. Not just in bed, but out of it, but I have so much on my plate right now with your case. I can’t concentrate on the case because I can’t stop thinking about you.”

Dylan sighed. “I get it. I don’t like it, but if you think it’s for the best, then that is what we’ll do.” She shrugged.

It was killing her to even think of not seeing him. What if the case was never solved? How would that even work?

“And if I don’t solve it?”
