“What’s going on, Clive? Have you heard anything?”

“There’s an auction in Kalispell tomorrow night and it’s specifically for breeder bulls. I heard there will be a lot of them, and word is, not all are legal. The auction house has been raided before, but somehow, they always come out unscathed. I was going to call you when I found out exactly when.”

“As soon as you know, call me. I’ll go there.”

“I’m expecting a call anytime now. I’ll get back to you.”

“Clive?”

“Yeah?”

“Don’t be jerking me around. I won’t like it.”

“I’m not stupid, Reeves. I know the consequences.” He disconnected.

Alex sighed as he pocketed his phone, then opened files on other cases to see if any of them had the same pattern.

He sighed when he thought about Dylan showing up last night. What the hell was she thinking? Damn hardhead. He hated the idea of not seeing her, but it had to be this way. He simply couldn’t think of anything but her, and he was hoping if he didn’t see her and concentrated on his job, he’d finish it sooner and be able to be with her. Because he wanted that more than anything. After such a short time, she came to mean a lot to him, and Zoey was an added bonus. The little girl was so precious, and he knew it wouldn’t be hard to fall in love with her as he had with her mother. What?

“No way,” he muttered.

“Did you find something?”

Alex glanced up to see Luke McCallister standing beside his desk and shook his head.

“Not yet.”

“Then you’re talking to yourself about a woman,” Luke said with a grin.

“Bingo. I’ve never met a more obstinate woman.” Alex sat back in his chair, and nodded for Luke to take a seat, which he did. “I was checking the place out last night. You know, waiting in the woods for something to happen. Her fence was cut a while ago, but they haven’t shown back up. I know they will, so I wanted to see.” Alex shook his head. “She showed up with a thermos of coffee because it was cold. I about had a fit.”

Luke laughed. “She sounds like she has a mind of her own and no matter what you tell her, she’ll do what she wants. God help us men from stubborn women.”

“I don’t know how she even knew I was there. Unless her manager told her. I did tell him. The thing is those rustlers could have cut that fence to throw me off and they’re going after the other bulls. I had Dylan have some of her men watch them, but if something happens, they’ll be in the crossfire. As much as I hate to do it, I’m going to have to go to the other pastures and watch and wait.”

“Perks of the job. Do you need any help? I finished up my case.”

“I would love it. I can’t watch all the pastures at once. I asked Dave for help, but everyone was busy. If you’re serious, I’ll ask him about you helping me out.”

“Of course, I’m serious. I’m between cases.” Luke shrugged.

“I’ll do it now. Come with me.”

“All right.”

Both men stood and made their way to Dave’s office. After talking with him, Luke was assigned to the case with Alex. They decided to start tonight. Maybe now, he’d be able to solve this case and get on with his life with Dylan and Zoey.

Dylan worked on the books, but the numbers just ran together. Alex was on her mind. She sat back in the chair and shook her head. Now she knew what Alex meant when he said he’d had trouble concentrating because of her.

“I get it, Agent Reeves.” She smiled.

When her cellphone rang, she picked it up to see his handsome face.

“Hello, Agent Reeves.”

“Ms. Walters,” he said, and she could hear the smile in his voice.
