“After noon.”

“All right. I’ll be here.”

“Thank you.”

“I think you should stay with me while you recover.”

“I don’t want to put you out, Alex.”

“You won’t. You can use the spare room if you’d like. I just don’t want you alone in case you need something. I’m sure your manager can run the ranch, and if he has any questions, he can call you. Your mom has Zoey. Stay with me.”

“If, you’re sure?”

“Yes, ma’am. I’m positive. I’ll take care of you.”

Dylan had no doubt about that. She knew he’d be there for her anytime she needed him and for that, she was thankful. She smiled and nodded.

The next day, Alex pulled his truck to a stop beside his porch and looked at Dylan.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes. For now.”

“Take a pain pill then lie down. I have to call the office, and then muck out the stalls, but I’ll be close, okay?”

“Yes, thank you.”

He opened his door, stepped out, and walked around to the passenger side. He opened the door, lifted her out, and carried her inside the house.

“I can walk.”

“I know, but I like carrying you.” He grinned as he entered the house. “Do you want to stay on the sofa for a while? You can watch some TV.”

“Yes, please.”

Alex nodded, carried her to the sofa, and gently placed her on it.

“Let me get you a glass of water, and you can take a pill.”

“Okay. Where’s Peaches?”

“Outside. Her pet door is closed, but I’ll let her in. She won’t bother you. She knows not to jump up.”

“She can keep me company.”

Alex grinned. “She’s good company. I’ll be right back.”

“I’ll be right here.” She smiled at him.

Later, when Alex entered the house, it was quiet. He imagined Dylan was still sleeping. He smiled when Peaches entered the kitchen and sat at his feet. He rubbed her ears.

“Hey, girl. Did you have a good afternoon? Let’s check on Dylan.” He headed for the living room to see her asleep on the sofa. He’d been out about three hours, so he was sure the pill was making her sleep, which was what she needed.

He decided to take a shower while she slept. He knew he didn’t smell very good right now. He leaned down, kissed her forehead, then headed for the bathroom. After he showered, he’d wake her and fix them something to eat.

Once he showered and dressed, he walked into the living room and to the sofa. He sat on the edge, brushed her hair back from her face, and stared at her. He was so in love with her and his heart about stopped when she’d been shot. Taking a deep breath, he gently shook her.
