“Dylan?”

Her eyes fluttered open, and she looked at him and smiled.

“Hi,” she said.

“Hi, yourself. Are you hungry? I can make sandwiches.”

“I’m starving. I’d love a sandwich.”

“How about BLTs?”

“That sounds wonderful. Thank you.” She tried to sit up but gasped at the pain.

“What are you doing?”

“I have to pee.”

“Oh, okay. Let me help you up.” Alex put his arm around the back of her and helped her sit up. It tore him apart hearing her moan at the pain. He got her to her feet, and took her arm, but she looked at him.

“I can make it from here. You are, in no way, going in the bathroom with me.”

He chuckled. “Okay but let me make sure you make it all right.”

“Okay.”

He followed her to the bathroom, and watched her go inside, then he headed for the kitchen to make the sandwiches.

As he fried the bacon, he listened for her in case she needed help. He hated that she’d been shot. He knew how it felt.

When he heard a noise behind him, he turned to see her standing in the doorway of the kitchen.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes, just a little sore. The pills help but I don’t like taking them. I know how people can get addicted to them.”

“I’ve seen it enough. That’s why I threw mine away.”

“Did you use them at all?”

“At first, I did because I was in a lot of pain, but once it was bearable, I tossed them.”

“Alex?”

“Yes?”

“Were the men caught?”

“Yes. They were in with the others who took your bull. Apparently, they have a big operation of thieves working together. I still can’t get who they’re working for, but I will. They weren’t there to steal another bull, they were there for revenge for the others getting caught. Either way, they’re all going to prison.”

“Revenge? How?”

“One of them said they were going to kill all your livestock. I told you; rustlers don’t care about who they hurt along the way.”

“I’m so glad they were caught before killing my animals.”

“Me too.”

“Something else is bothering you. What is it?”
