Alex sighed. “I have to go to an inquisition about the shooting. I’m sure I’ll be questioned as to why you were there with me. I’m not looking forward to it.”

“Will they talk to me? I’ll tell them we were camping,” Dylan said.

“No, they have no desire to talk to you. It’s me who will get the ass-chewing.”

“I’m so sorry. I hope you don’t lose your job.”

“Honestly, I don’t know what will happen. They could suspend me or fire me.”

“I hope not. I’d hate to see you lose your job. You love it.”

“I do. I’ll just have to tell them we were camping.” Alex shook his head. “I hope I don’t have to face McMillon. He’s one tough son of a bitch.”

“When is it?”

“Day after tomorrow. I have to make a trip to Butte.”

“I’ll go home tomorrow then. Mom will stay with me.”

“All right.”

“I can tell you’re not looking forward to it.”

“I’m not. I’m not the first agent to be called before him, and I won’t be the last. He can be so damn condescending, and he wants things his way, not yours. He had Nevada so pissed that he quit.”

“Nevada Shelton?”

“Yes. He wasn’t wearing his vest while he was checking out a tip. He was shot and almost died.”

“He almost died, and this McMillon didn’t care?”

“It’s not that he didn’t care. He just made sure that Nevada knew how he felt about it. In all honesty, Nevada should have had his vest on, but he was checking out a lead and not even on duty. That’s no excuse though, and McMillon reminded him of it. Nevada knew he was going to be fired, so he saved them the trouble and quit. It worked out for him. He loves being a deputy.”

“I hope it goes well for you, Alex. I’d hate for you to lose your job over something I did.”

“Don’t worry about it. It is what it is. I’ll deal with it, either way.”

“Yes, but if you lose your job, it’s my fault. I should have listened to you.”

“Yes, you should have but nothing can be done about it now. We were camping.” He shrugged.

“I’m so sorry.”

He strode to her, cupped her face in his hands, and kissed her lips.

“It’s all right, Dylan. We’ll deal with it.” He walked back to the stove. “Have a seat. These are ready.”

Alex heard her sigh and knew she was worried about the inquisition, but it was something he had to deal with. Hopefully, it would go fine, and he’d keep his job.

Later that evening, as they sat on the sofa, watching a movie, Dylan couldn’t keep her eyes off him. He had no idea how hot he made her just looking at him. Did he have to wear those damn sweatpants? She knew there was nothing under them but the man himself, and she was horny. She snorted and Alex glanced at her. She shook her head. He frowned but turned his eyes back to the TV.

Taking a deep breath, she moved over him and straddled his lap. His hands gripped her hips.

“What are you doing?”

“I want you.”
