Not even when he lay down with Lena on the floor, pulling the blanket over the both of them.

Right now, his head was lying on the softest pillow known to man – and she would straight up massacre him if she awoke to this realization. He breathed in her scent, felt the softness under his cheek, and treasured the way their legs were entangled right now, only to realize that steady thump under his ear was a little faster.

*thump, thump*

*thump, thump*

*thump, thump*

Play it off and act cool,he thought nervously and leaned upward to see her watching him warily.

“Hey, Lumberjack…” he said, his voice husky with sleep and awareness of the beautiful woman in his arms.

“Hey… pudding,” she whispered, smiling nervously, as he started to say something, only for his brain to halt in awareness.

Pudding?

Oh no…

Poooding.

Pud-din, angels, angles, and obtuse things.

“Oh,” Jake began and hesitated, looking at her nervously.Him. He was completelyobtuseand the world’s biggest idiot with loose lips. “Um, yeah, I might have been outta my gourd last night. I promise I was on my best behavior – I think.”

“You think?”

“Well, considering I’m not a hundred percent sure that I’ve got pants on right now? I’m hoping that I was.”

“I have pants on, so there is that little bit of relief.”

“Dang it… I mean, uh,that’s great.”

… And met her sleepy gaze and soft smile with his own very disappointed one.

“How are you feeling?” she asked quietly, changing the subject.

“Sore, rested, embarrassed, and a little nervous,” he admitted honestly, before jerking up the blanket and closing his eyes for a moment in relief and frustration. “Pants are present.”

Lena laughed softly… and it did a number on his heart.

“I like it when you laugh,” he whispered – and paused. “I don’t mean for things to be weird or uncomfortable, but you have a really lovely smile.”

“I like it when you talk to me like this,” she confessed quietly. “I like this version of your personality where you aren’t trying to show off, one-up me, or lash out verbally.”

“I’m sorry if I’ve ever hurt your feelings.”

“Yeah, telling me you could ‘get the milk for free’anytime you wanted in town was not your best moment,” she said evenly, not looking away from him and he saw the hurt in her eyes.

“Why would I search for someone’s pathetic version of milk that is probably spoiled… when I have the finest cream at home, just waiting for me?”

Both grew quiet, not looking away from each other as they remained where they were on the pallet she’d made to be close to him during the night.

“I do believe that is both the weirdest and nicest thing you’ve ever said to me,” she began, the surprise evident in her voice.

“I’m trying,” he admitted softly, touching her cheek.

“Keep at it,” she urged, smiling… and traced the shell of his ear, making him shiver as it tickled.
