“Wow.” I stare at my friend like I’ve never seen him before. All this time, he’s been privy to the supernatural world. He’spartof that world. But I had no idea.

“That night we drove home from the concert and we were attacked,” I begin, licking my dry lips. I hate thinking about that night. It’s the night my entire world was upended. “Did you know a demon was attacking us?” Before mybashertenput a Concealment on you to make you forget what happened?

“No, I had no idea. I was shocked when my brother sensed my Concealment and helped me remove it. Not even Mom and Dad noticed it.”

“Both of your parents are werewolves?” I realize I never asked, but I assumed.

“Yup.”

“Why couldn’t they detect the Concealment?”

He hesitates. “They’ve been… distracted.”

“Working with The Alliance?”

He nods. “Specifically, Dina.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah, they’ve known Dina for years. They always spoke so highly about her. I had no idea she was your mom.”

“She’s not my mom,” the words fly out. They’re harsher than I intend. I take a breath and rephrase, “I mean, she’s my birth mother. But I already have a mom. And a dad.”

Again, sympathy floods Joey’s expression. “You’re right. My bad.”

“It’s okay.” I change the subject. “So, are you officially working with The Alliance now, too?”

“I want to, but my parents are hesitant. They didn’t let Joey join until he graduated college. But now, with how everything’s going, I don’t think they’ll stop me.”

“Do you mean the Darkness?” And how it’s seemingly growing stronger every time I hear about it.

He nods.

I want to ask more. Specifically, what he knows about the Darkness and its leader. What’s their objective? And how close are they to reaching their goal?

Before I can formulate a question, Joey says, “So… you and Mr. Cohen?”

I choke on saliva. My cheeks are red. “What?”

Joey shifts awkwardly in his seat, but he’s determined to see this conversation out. “I’ve heard… things.”

“What things?”

“Things saying you are ba-something with Mr. Cohen and his brother. That you’re their soulmates?”

I expected my friends would be a mixture of horrified and scandalized if, or when, they ever learned the truth about my soulmate status with not one, not two, but four Fallen angels. But I’m impressed to see Joey looks mostly curious, if a little awkward. But he’s not disgusted.

I wonder if that will change when he learns about Adrian and Zeke.

Thinking about my Dark Fallen soulmates makes my stomach squeeze with worry. I left them at the Dark Embassy. The attack was mostly over, but I don’t know what repercussions they faced for helping me escape with Odette and the others sent to save me.

“Ronnie?”

I take a deep breath. “Yeah, it’s true.”

Joey sits back in his seat. “Wow. That’s… wow.”

“I know.”
