Just what I needed.

Of course, life can’t go the way I want it to. I take a deep breath and leave my tray sitting on the bar, then head toward the elevators located at the entrance of the casino. When the doors open up, revealing the staff bustling around the large space ahead, I barely spare them a glance as I head toward the large doors with his name emblazoned on it.

His assistant is sitting at her desk and waves to me before buzzing me through the doors. This is the moment my stomach chooses to roll with so much anxiety that I throw up as soon as I step foot inside, getting every last bit on the waxed shoes in front of me.

I’ve never been more embarrassed in my life.

Chapter Six

Emmett

LookslikeI’llbeneeding to get new shoes.

Casey groans while wiping at her mouth, and I frown at her. “You’re still sick?” It’s been weeks, shouldn’t she be okay now? Just like before, I should be more worried about the state of my company and less about the state Casey still seems to be in. “Did you go to the doctor?” I ask, ignoring what I should be doing.

She chuckles nervously and nods, walking through the office with her held high as if she didn’t just throw up all over my floor. I poke my head out of the door and smile at Fran. “Could you grab some towels and get a mess cleaned up for me in here?”

Fran nods. “Sure thing.” She immediately gets up from her desk and heads away from me and I turn back into the room with a frown aimed at Casey as she massages her temples with her fingers.

“What’s going on, Casey?” She doesn’t answer, only lifts her head up and stares at me for a few moments before glancing out the large window to her right. There’s a beautiful view of the city beyond, but I hate that her gaze is no longer on me. “Casey, talk to me.”

Every intention I had of telling her I need to let her go goes out the window as her body shakes. “I’m not sure this is the time to talk about it.”

She tries to lift from the chair and push around me, eager to get away, but I wrap my hand around her elbow and halt her chance to flee. “No, wait, what’s going on?”

Casey groans and throws her head back in aggravation. “Now is really not the time, Emmett,” she grinds out. “Trust me.”

I cock my head to the side and shake my head. “That’s not good enough. You’ve missed a lot of work lately, it’s putting a dent in staff during your shift. If there’s a logical explanation, then I need to know what that is. Are you okay?”

She scoffs. “What’s your definition of okay?”

“Are you dying?” I ask, my tone dripping with disdain. Why must she be so difficult right now?

“Oh, no, definitely not dying. But I wouldn’t exactly say I’m doing okay either.”

I growl low in my throat and glare at her. “Just tell me what the hell is going on, Casey.”

“Why can’t you just leave it alone? You don’t need to concern yourself with me, you certainly never have before.”

She’s not wrong. I’ve never bothered to worry about her the way I have been lately, but this involves my business, and I deserve to know what’s going on. There’s also the fact that I’ve never had such a strong need to make sure Casey is doing okay. Maybe if I hadn’t let my dick do the thinking that night, things would go on as they normally would – with me barely paying her any attention because that’s the way Dominic wanted things to be.

I run a hand through my hair, tugging aggressively at the ends. “I really don’t have time for this, Casey. What is going on with you?”

“Fine,” she says, huffing in annoyance and waving her arms out in front of her. “You want to know what’s going on?” Her hand falls over her stomach, and she chuckles. “I’m fucking pregnant, Emmett.”

Pregnant?

I blink a few times, not believing the words coming out of her mouth as she pulls her phone from her pocket and scrolls through it. She holds it up to my face, inviting me to look at the words on the screen, and I quickly glance over them with my heart thundering in my chest.

She’s pregnant. It’s clear as day from the image pulled up on her phone. The results staring me right in the damn face, but I still don’t want to believe it. “I-is it mine?” I ask, which was definitely the wrong question to ask judging by the anger that boils in her gaze.

“You asshole,” Casey grinds out. “What, you think I just walked around the city letting anyone who looked at me get into my pants, not even a month after my dreadful wedding day?” She chuckles and shakes her head. “Trust me, it’s yours.”

How the hell could this have happened?

We used protection. I run through the night we spent together, trying to conjure the image of me rolling a condom on, but I come up blank. How could I have been stupid enough to sink into her without protection?

I push away from her, the emotions whirling through me taking up too much space. “Get out,” I whisper.
