Iraced after Verity, curious about the bathroom my-damn-self. When Lulee had told me that we’d be staying in a cabin, I had pictured a classic ski lodge type of room. I had not expected a top-floor suite at the Bellagio. This place was insane, but a good kind of insane.

“Oh, my Holy Jesus,” Verity exclaimed as the bathroom door swung open.

“You ain’t lying,” I muttered as we walked further inside.

The bathroom was about the same size as the bedroom platform, and it came with a jacuzzi tub, dual sinks, and a shower that no one in their right mind would ever want to leave. It was the entire length of the back wall, had power jets every-damn-where, and a balance seat at the back end of the shower.

Like two little kids, Verity went over towards the tub while I hit the shower, and we were touching and turning knobs like we’d never been let out in public before. We most definitely underestimated the retreat’s amenities, and we probably owed Marilyn Clark an apology.

“The next time we come here, I’m bringing a jug of bubble bath and a crapload of snacks now that I know the rooms come with a kitchen,” Verity said, and I tried not to read too much into her words. I knew that she was just excited, more than she was really thinking of coming back here with me.

“I think-”

She put her hand up to stop me. “Hold up. Do you hear that?”

I walked over to where she was standing near the tub. “Hear what?”

Verity cocked her head a bit, straining to listen to our surroundings. “I thought I heard like a…a buzzing sound or something.”

I looked around but saw nothing. “Are you sure your ears aren’t just ringing from the audiobook?”

Her blue eyes looked up at me. “I don’t think so,” she murmured. “But…I mean, maybe.”

We remained where we stood, straining to hear anything out of place, but after a few seconds of hearing nothing, we finally made our way back into the room. The place really was amazing, and if all went well between me and Verity this week, I would definitely bring her back for our anniversary or just because she wanted to.

“This place is incredible,” she said, echoing my thoughts. “Absolutely incredible.”

“Yeah,” I agreed. “A part of me feels like I might owe the owners an apology for judging the place for its spotty wi-fi and odd reception.”

Verity’s blue eyes looked over my way. “Okay…so, it wasn’t just me?”

I shook my head. “While I wouldn’t say that Marilyn Clark wascrazy, I would say that there were some odd moments there.”

I watched Verity let out a soft chuckle as she shook her head. “When Lulee first showed me the pictures of this place, I immediately thought of all those horror movies that take place in the woods.”

I grinned. “Me, too.”

Looking back over at me, she asked, “Well, we’ll get a better feel for the place after we meet Marilyn’s husband and son, I think. The new guy seems to be okay.”

That got my back up.

Was I feeling a bit jealous? Yep.

“For a second there, I thought she might turn him away.”

“I know,” she replied softly. “Between Lulee saying all the wrong things and that guy showing up, things felt very strained.”

I just nodded, then deciding to address the elephant in the room, I asked, “What side of the bed do you sleep on?”

Verity’s entire frame froze. “What?”

I walked back over to our bags, grabbed my suitcase, then walked over towards the bed. “I just need to know which side of the room to get comfortable on.”

“I…uhm, I usually sleep on the left side because I like being close to the window,” she answered hesitantly. “But since the window is right in the middle behind the bed, I guess any side will work.”

I immediately made my way around the bed towards the right side, giving me a direct line towards the bathroom. While I didn’t care either way, I felt better knowing that I’d be closest to the bathroom. I had a feeling that I was going to need to dart in there often this week to take care of business.
