Gosh.

I was so going to miss my best friend.

I set my glass down on the island and walked over to my fiancé. When I got within reaching distance, he pulled me down beside him. “What are you two giggling about over there?” he asked as he kissed the side of my head.

“Just girl stuff.” I gazed lovingly into his eyes.

Gosh.

I was going to miss looking into my lumberjack’s eyes.

I was going to miss how protected and safe—and loved—I felt in his arms. And in his castle.

“Ah, to be young and in love again,” Anna said, giving us her proud mother look.

Marcello finished the book and looked up at his wife. “Your son is not young.”

That made us all laugh—even Dani. But of course, she didn’t understand what was going on.

“Not too old to make us some grandbabies, I hope.” Anna peered over at us and then at her husband.

“We already have a granddaughter.” Marcello kissed Dani’s forehead. She giggled and snuggled into him.

I felt a burning behind my eyes, but I blinked it away.

“Daniella, you are my granddaughter,” he said loudly, almost like a declaration. “Just like every baby your mother carries. You are all the same to us.”

Marcello’s eyes held mine with his—in that same hypnotic fashion as the first time I’d met him. I couldn’t have looked away even if I’d wanted to.

“Yes, Daniella,” Anna said as she reached over and rubbed Dani’s back. “Yournonnois speaking the truth. You belong to us now. Just like all of your brothers and sisters will.” Anna gazed back at me and then at Carlo. “Do you have any idea when we’ll be getting more grandbabies?”

Carlo’s arm around me tightened. “We’re working on it.”

Her face broke into a huge smile, and she sighed. “Good, very, very good.” She clasped her hands together, and I watched her eyes grow glassy.

Stefan stood and excused himself after making up some stupid reason he had to leave. He said goodbye to his parents, but he didn’t even look at us before he took off.

“What’s wrong with him?” Anna asked Carlo in a low, suspicious tone.

Carlo shrugged and said, “Who the fuck knows?”

Anna’s eyes went wide, and she turned to Dani. “Come, seeNonna.” She glared at her son and said, “Carlo, you have to watch your language in front of your daughter. Such words you’ll teach her from your own mouth.”

My lungs stopped working.

Carlo’s hand pulsed against my shoulder.

Yeah.

He hadn’t missed what his mother said.

“Ah, she is right. You need to be cautious. Especially around your daughters.” Marcello smiled at Dani, and she went right back to him.

Good grief.

She really did like big powerful men.

Eve walked into the living room with a tray of various appetizers. We’d worked on making them after breakfast.
