Of course, Carlo had wanted us to take an early “nap,” but I told him this was important. He said that getting me pregnant was more important.

Thank goodness, Eve had stepped in and shooed him away. “Give her a break, honey. Knowing you, I’m sure she needs it.”

We all ate and chatted for the next hour or so.

Nick even came in and sat with us for a while. He’d spent the morning working in the library upstairs.

“Ah, save one of the carrots for your new friend, Daniella,” Marcello said and handed her a small carrot from the tray.

“Friend?” she looked at him with a tiny, confused look on her face.

He smiled and bent down to kiss her cheek. Then he got out his phone and typed something into it.

I looked at Carlo, but he didn’t seem to know what was going on either.

A minute later, a man I didn’t recognize strode into the living room.

And that man was carrying something in his hands.

“Oh, no,” I mumbled to myself, knowing exactly what Marcello had done.

Just like Dani did, too. “Bunny!” she screeched so loudly my ears hurt. Her little body shook with excitement.

“What is wrong with you people?” I whispered to my fiancé.

Carlo laughed and leaned down to kiss me. “We spoil our women, Giselle. Get used to it,” he said against my lips.

That hit me.

Hard.

Get used to it.

Get used to it.

I wouldn’t have a chance to.

And neither would Dani.

I’d have to take her away from all of this.

Not only from the luxuries and the spoiling.

But from all the love she was surrounded by each and every day.

And that killed.

She’d never had grandparents.

The ones who were doting on her right now—the ones who’d willingly, without question, accepted her as their own—I’d have to drag her away from.

And Dani wouldn’t even remember them.

She would never know that once upon a time, she had two men who wanted to be her father, and two strangers who wanted to be her grandparents.

And one auntie who would do anything in the world for her.

“Why are you crying?” Carlo asked as his thumbs wiped under my eyes. I hadn’t realized tears were falling down my cheeks.
