“Aw, she’s a mother, Carlo,” Anna said in a kind tone. “And mothers cry when their children are happy.” Anna’s voice hitched at the end of her sentence.

I looked over and saw Anna wiping away tears of her own.

And that made me cry even harder.

“Oh, you guys need to stop it,” Eve sniffled and let out a laugh/cry. “You’re setting me off.”

Nick chuckled and kissed his wife. “It doesn’t take much for that to happen.”

Eve wrapped her arms around her husband. He spoke softly into her ear—far too low for us to hear. I think that was the point.

Marcello looked at his son and spoke in Italian. Loosely translated, he said, “Son, welcome to living with a wife. One minute they’re laughing. The next—crying.”

Anna gasped and scowled at her husband.

Carlo chuckled and answered him back in Italian, “I’m looking forward to it.”

I just sat there and brushed away my tears.

And pretended I didn’t understand what they were saying.

“She loves you. That is obvious.” My father pointed out the truth as we sat outside by the pool. Giselle was in the water with Dani. Nick and Eve had their oldest, Theo, in the water as well.

Dani thought it was wonderful having a friend in with her.

Even if that friend was just a baby, splashing around in a floaty toy.

“I love her, too,” I told my father. “She’s like no one I’ve ever met before.”

He nodded and coughed a bit.

Christ.

That fuckin’ cough of his. It made my goddamn blood run cold every time I heard it.

“Does she know—about the life?” he asked in a low, hushed tone.

I shook my head.

He nodded. “That is probably better. Maybe after she has a few more babies—” he coughed, “at least one son. And then you tell her.”

Informing Giselle she was about to marry into a crime family was not high on my priority list.

But getting her pregnant definitely was.

“We’ll see,” I said and didn’t promise anything. If I could keep my dealings from her for the rest of my life—I would do that.

“The wedding will be soon?” he asked the other question I didn’t want to think about. Of course, I wanted to marry Giselle as soon as possible. If it weren’t for one thing.

My brother.

“As soon as I can get her gorgeous ass down the aisle.”

My father laughed.
