My head tilted to the side. “Okay, what is it?”

“Your—name. Your real one, I mean. I would prefer to use that instead.” His voice was cool and matter of fact.

My stomach began to hurt.

Let’s face it, in this business, I didn’t have much power.

Practically none.

We could be as careful as possible.

Ilona’s people could check the men out from top to bottom.

But—and there was always a “but”—you never knew if or when a guy could turn on you.

And hopefully if I survived whatever he pulled—at least my real name would never have crossed his lips.

I knew how stupid my reasoning sounded.

Why would I care about something like my name?

Because.

Just—because.

I didn’t own shit-all in this world.

But I did own my name.

And, I didn’t want to give it out to any of my Johns.

Or Nicks.

My eyes fell to the floor before I shut them for a second. “Nick, I’d really rather not.” Then I opened my eyes and gazed back up to him. “I’m sorry.”

He didn’t say anything for what felt like a long time. I was scared I’d offended him, and he would ask me to leave.

Then I’d be out the massive payday Nick and I had agreed on. Not to mention Ilona’s people might decide I wasn’t a good fit for them anymore if I lost their commission because of something so stupid as not giving Nick my name.

“Very well, then. I have to get back to the office. I only came here to greet you and make sure you’d settled in.” His arms tightened around me, and I squeezed him back.

“Is there anything you’d like me to do while you’re gone?” I asked, pasting on a small smile for him, wishing he would stay here with me instead of going back to work.

He nodded slightly, and said, “Yes, you’ll need several new outfits. I’ve sent you a brief list of clothing I want you to purchase this afternoon. Langcaster will drive you and assist with whatever you need of him. There’s a credit card in your name on your bedside table. Use that, please.”

“Oh, okay. I think I can manage that.” I grinned up at him. A shopping trip was not exactly a chore. Especially when I wasn’t paying.

“Good. I’d also like you to go into a spa and get the full treatment. There’s a particular one near the shops I’ve specified you go to.”

I laughed slightly. “Hmm, a shopping and spa day? I think I can handle that.”

Nick chuckled, then gave me a quick kiss. “Glad to hear that.”
