What Nick said made me clench my thighs together. “Oh.”

“Yeah, ‘oh’,” he said with a wicked smile I hadn’t seen before. I closed my lips on the spoon, licking the ice cream off. But before I had a chance to swallow it, Nick leaned over to kiss me.

It wasn’t a gentle peck on the lips. His tongue swept into my mouth, and I found myself dueling him with my own tongue—fighting for the ice cream.

In the end, we both got a taste.

He continued feeding me and himself as we settled back into watching the movie. It was right at one of my favorite parts and I told Nick that.

“What do you like about it?”

I didn’t look at him as I spoke, because I wanted to catch every single word and nuance of the scene, “Because he’s a ‘richie’ and she’s a girl from the wrong side of the tracks. He’s embarrassed of their relationship, and she calls him out on it.”

“What’s to like about that?” he asked, his voice sounding cynical and slightly confused.

I snorted and continued watching. “Because,” I frowned and shook my head, “she doesn’t give in to his bullshit. She likes who she is and knows her worth. And if he doesn’t, then she’s better off without him.”

Nick didn’t say another word until the end of the movie.

He handed me a few tissues. “You didn’t like it?” I asked as I sniffled and blew my nose.

“Of course not,” he replied very unceremoniously.

His response—and the serious look on his face made me giggle and cry at the same time. I wasn’t over the emotions of the film yet, but Nick’s reaction tickled something inside of me.

“What do you mean, ‘of course not?’” I asked, wiping my eyes with another tissue.

The lines between his eyebrows grew deeper. “He’s a young, tiny, dipshit with an overinflated ego. She should never have taken him back after what he did. She’s young and beautiful. And smart. There’s plenty of strong, rich guys out there who’d love to own that.”

My belly did an unfamiliar flip at the same time my heart squeezed so tight it actually hurt. “I’m not sure her goal is to be ‘owned’, Nick.”

His eyes darted to mine and held them. “If it’s the right guy—it will be.”

I didn’t understand the sudden warmth I felt inside my chest at his offensive words.

Any and every woman would want to fight him on his statement. But all I could do was fall deeper into his eyes.

He turned away from me and dumped the bowl onto the bedside table. Then moved back to me even closer.

I inhaled deeply, preparing myself for what would inevitably come next.

When he lowered his mouth to mine, I slipped my hands around the back of his neck and kissed him deeply. He still tasted like cherries, and I loved it. He slowed the kiss then pulled away, giving me a quick peck on my forehead.

“You’ve had a hard day and I’m wiped. Let’s sleep, okay?” he said, then laid down on the bed beside me.

I was incredibly shocked that he didn’t take it any further than that. Maybe he was waiting for me to make the first move? “Umm, well, I can do all the work if you want?” I said, then turned fully to him and kissed his lips.

Instead of going along with it, he stopped me immediately, grabbing my wrists with his hands. “What I want is for you to turn around, put on the next godforsaken, shit movie and fall asleep.”

Even though he’d essentially turned me down, I still let out a small laugh at his demands. “Admit it,” I said, looking into his devastatingly handsome eyes, “you like these movies.”

“I’ll admit no such thing. In fact, I just told you how awful the last one was,” he said, his hands not loosening their hold on me at all.

“Do they remind you of when you watched them as a kid?” I said, feeling in a much better mood now.

He let out a low, deep laugh. “I was barely alive when that last movie came out.” I loved watching his face transform whenever he laughed. Those lines between his eyebrows disappeared and his two dimples showed.

I didn’t have any of the control in what Nick and I shared—but when I made him smile, I felt like I did. And it squeezed my heart to see him like this, and not so serious—as he was most of the time. “Uh huh, you probably went to see it in the theatres.”
