This time he laughed louder, and his smile widened. He sat up and wrapped his arms around me, dropping his lips down to mine. “Are you feeling better?” he asked while he kissed me gently.

I nodded. “Yes, Nick.”

“Good. Now turn over and put on another movie. I have to get up early.” He placed one more hard kiss onto my forehead and pulled me down to the bed with him. Then he turned me around to face the TV.

Then he yanked my body into his and spooned me while the next movie started to play.

After about twenty minutes, I let my eyes drift shut. The day had been crap, but it sure ended well. My mind, body and spirit had been through the wringer, and I was exhausted.

I felt his arm tighten around me. “Do you know your worth, Cherry?” he asked in a small whisper next to my ear. I could feel his breath tickle my neck and cheek.

Somewhere between here and dreamland, I re-emerged. Barely. “I don’t have any, Nick,” I mumbled out. I think. “Those people at the stores proved that today.”

I felt a soft kiss on my neck, and it made me sigh. “You’re worth more than all of them put together.”

The sheer audacity of his words made me giggle. “I don’t think so.”

“But I do.”

“Then you’d be wrong.”

“I’m never wrong.”

The food, the ice cream—and most especially the way Nick had cared for me tonight—had put me in the best mood I’d been in for a long time. Feeling his strong arm around me as he held me tight to his body, made all my worries float away.

“This time you are.”

“I’m not, and I’ll prove it to you.”

I inhaled deeply, comforted by Nick in so many ways, I was ready to step off the cliff into sleep. “Okay,” I muttered before darkness took over and I floated away into a dreamless sleep.

Cherry

Iwoke up with the sun shining directly into my eyes.

Which was strange considering my window was small and I always closed my blinds at night.

I stretched and let out a groan as my body felt completely weightless and well rested for the first time in ages.

My eyes burst open as I assumed I’d likely slept in and now everyone would be late for school.

But when I sat up, I realized I was still at Nick’s.

I gazed over to the clock on the wall that said it was almost ten o’clock. My stomach growled with hunger.

Feeling refreshed for the first time in forever, I smiled so huge, it was in danger of cracking. A flash of red caught my attention, and I turned my head toward the pillow beside me.

One, single, red rose sat on the pillow on top of a note.

I scooped up the rose and inhaled its floral scent, then I picked up the note.

“I hope you’re feeling better. Text me when you wake up, please.” It was signed, ‘Nick’.

Feeling better?

My brain raced to remember what he was talking about.
