“I can’t believe you had the theater to yourselves. That never happens on eighties night,” Giselle said, and I nodded my head in agreement.

“I know, it was weird. But it was also a lot of fun,” I said, and we both laughed. “How’s everything going?” I asked, crossing my fingers that she was still on board to take care of my needy, annoying, sometimes horrible, siblings.

“It’s—going. I don’t understand why they’re more work than my baby. She doesn’t even walk, or feed herself, or—”

“Or talk,” I interjected, sighing loudly as I shook my head. “Your sweet baby doesn’t have the ability to talk back. Yet,” I said, not wishing that on anyone.

Giselle nodded and said, “I know, I know. I can’t wait for my time to come.” She’d only been a mom for a few months, but she’d already resigned herself to the inevitable.

“Let’s just hope she’ll appreciate having a cool, young mom.”

“Ha, that’s funny. I don’t think it’s possible for any child to think that,” she said back to me. Unfortunately, I was almost certain she was correct. I’d never known anyone who thought their parents were young or cool.

“I have to go, I’m sorry. It’s Nick’s birthday today and I want to cook for him after I get Langcaster to take me out shopping,” I said, looking at the time on my phone.

“Oh, is he making you prepare a huge feast for him?” she asked as she leaned in closer to the screen.

“Nah, he doesn’t even know that I know it’s his birthday. Langcaster told me yesterday, and I’ve been trying to come up with a gift for a gazillionaire. I mean, the guy has everything,” I said, letting my frustration come out in my voice as I raised my hands up.

“It must be wonderful there—people waiting on you hand and foot, never having to lift a finger.” She sighed and looked off to the side.

“Uh, yeah of course it’s a sweet gig, my friend.” I laughed, thinking about how nice and relaxing my time here was. “No laundry or dishes. No kids screaming at me twenty-four seven. No—real life.”

She smiled at me and I returned it. “I’m so happy for you. Of all the people I know, you deserve this break the most. I mean, I’m a close second, but I’m still excited for you.” Her head turned the second a small cry sounded in the distance. “Ugh, I better go get her since I don’t have a staff of twelve to help me out.”

I gave her my best pouty face and thanked her again for helping me out.

Then I threw on some clothes and went shopping for a man who could buy anything in the world.

“Are you sure, madam?”the cook asked me for the third time.

I undid my messy apron with my even messier hands. The flour would have to stay glued to my fingers. I was completely out of time, and I needed a shower badly.

“Yes, trust me. It’ll all be ready in an hour on the dot, I promise,” I said, rushing out of the kitchen. The cook had stared over my shoulder the entire afternoon, asking if I needed help.

I figured he was probably scared I’d either break something or steal it.

Neither of which happened.

Even so, I still enjoyed the heck out of cooking in a huge, fancy kitchen. The kitchen at home was tiny and more often than not, crowded.

Yeah, the cook was annoying. But he still tolerated my music—and mess. I’d cleaned up most of my mess after I made the salad and prepared the main meal. Time wasn’t on my side after I’d finished with dessert, though.

Oh well, I’d deal with him later.

I rushed through my shower, and my makeup routine.

One thing I wouldn’t skimp on was my hair. I could do a mean updo, but the best ones took time and precision. Even with the best of mirrors, it could be a painstaking thing to attempt.

The dress I had chosen to wear tonight deserved the best hair possible, and I was going to give it.

I’d seen the price tag on that dress. It was burned into my brain.

I wanted to look nice for Nick’s birthday—and I wanted to let him know how much I appreciated him buying me such gorgeous, expensive clothing.

I also wanted him to want me.

It was my full intention to have him devour the meal and dessert that had taken me hours to prepare—and then devour me right after.
