“Are you sure he doesn’t want to continue with the month? Even after what happened?”

I pursed my lips together, then spoke, “I have to deal with Asher. It’s over. We’re done.”

“He did not sound like a man who was done,” she said, raising her eyebrows far too high on her forehead. “Is there anything left of your bed? Because half of me expects to see a big old pile of dust up there where your mattress used to be.”

That cracked me up too much.

My shoulders bounced and I let my head fall back. “Okay, you might be right about that poor mattress. We gave it quite the workout.”

My phone vibrated on the table, and I picked it up. It was from Nick. “Can we discuss this later? I’m in a meeting.”

Yeah, there was nothing to discuss. And hearing his voice on the phone was only going to make me sadder. So, I went into my banking app and refunded him nearly the full amount.

My guts hurt when I pressed send.

All that money.

Crap.

Still, I’d had the most fun with Nick than I’d had—ever, in my whole life. Even though we’d only had a short time together, it broke my heart to have it end.

I set my phone down again and Giselle and I chatted for a while until we finished the folding.

Then I noticed an email notification pop up on my screen from my bank.

It said that Nick had declined my electronic transfer.

I opened up my email and read it more closely. As I was reading the first email, another one came in.

It was from Nick.

He’d sent the remaining three weeks of money, and it was instantly deposited into my account.

“Oh my gosh,” I whispered to myself as my heart started beating faster. My palms were sweating as I messaged him back immediately.

“Why did you do that? You don’t need to pay me for the rest of the month. What are you doing?” I sent to him, in total shock. I’d never had that kind of money in my account before.

Then I went back into my banking app and shipped that hefty amount directly to him.

“I’m in a meeting. We’ll talk about this later.” He texted, making my blood start to boil. We weren’t going to discuss anything later.

While I was thinking of what to say, I received another email saying Nick had declined my electronic transfer.

Again.

“I’m going to kill him,” I muttered, staring at the email, not believing what it said.

“What’s going on? You’re as white as a ghost.”

I looked over at Giselle. “He just paid me for the rest of the month.”

Giselle’s mouth gaped open. “No way.” Then she quickly recovered. “See? I told you he was not done with you yet.” She smiled at me and did a cute little wiggle on the couch. “You should go back to his place. I’ll call you when Asher gets here. There’s nothing you can do in the meantime anyway. Except make some money.”

Then she flopped back against the seat of the couch, arms above her head, eyes closed. Her hips made obscene gyrating movements as she moaned, “Oh Nick, yes! Harder, Nick! Oh my God, Nick!”

The springs in the old couch squeaked during her performance—not as loudly as my bed, of course, but still noisy.

“Shut up, you perv,” I said, laughing at her.
