We could be mad as hell at each other.

Like, fighting mad.

But if one of us was being attacked or needed help—they always had our support.

“Don’t listen,” Nick whispered in my ear as he held me and rushed out the door.

Eve

Once we stepped outside, I took in large lungful’s of fresh air.

It really had been stifling inside the holding cell area.

Nick thanked Len first, then I did the same before he hurried off with promises of delivering Asher back home after his arraignment. Which apparently might be at the end of the day, but more likely tomorrow morning.

“Let me drive you,” Nick said, steering me in the opposite direction of my car.

I dug my feet into the ground. “No, I have to take my car home.” I looked up into his face, again blown away by how handsome he was. I couldn’t help but reach my fingers up and touch the stubble on his jawline. “Thank you for all you’ve done. I don’t know how much Len costs, but I’ll pay you back.”

I said it.

That didn’t mean I meant it.

I had an idea of what Len charged, and it would probably be decades before I’d have enough cash to pay Nick back.

“I don’t want you to pay me back. Are you okay to drive? You were pretty upset when you left,” he said, his fingertips grazing the side of my face and into my hair.

“Hmm,” I said, leaning into his touch.

I was going to miss this.

So much.

Nick just being kind and protective.

“Yeah, I’m better now thanks to you,” I said, faking a smile for him. “I really need to get back home. Thanks again for your help. I don’t know what we would have done without you,” I said, meaning every word of that.

We would have had to wait for some busy, overworked public defender to eventually show up and deal with this mess.

Instead, Nick and his lawyer managed to come to the rescue.

He leaned down and gave me a sweet kiss, making my lips tingle. “Anytime,” he said in such a low, seductive voice it made my knees weak.

This time, I grinned up at him with a genuine smile. “I’m really sorry for how all of this—ended.”

His hands slid down to my shoulders and squeezed. “It’s not your fault.”

In that moment, I got completely lost in his bright, sparkly eyes. “It is my fault, and I’m really, really sorry we won’t have our month together.”

He smirked down at me. “Nope, not a month. Drive safe, Eve,” he said in an almost happy tone. “And for God sakes, be careful.”

Then he kissed me again briefly before leaving.

The whole way home,I cried constant tears.

Yes, for Asher and the fact that he’d gone back to his old tricks to help the family. And gotten caught.
