But I also cried for me.

I really wanted to spend the month with Nick, and I hadn’t made it a week.

I shook my head and wiped my tears away.

“Stop being such a baby,” I whispered to myself, taking in a deep breath. “Nothing good ever happens to you. This isn’t a surprise.”

And wasn’t that the damn truth.

The one time in my life where I had a chance to escape reality for a time, and it all went to Hell.

Now, it was time to go back to reality.

I sighed loudly and turned up the music on the radio, hoping for a distraction that never came. All too quickly, I pulled up and into my driveway. “Welcome back to the shithole,” I muttered to myself as I turned off the car and jumped out.

I nearly went to grab my suitcase out of the backseat when I remembered I hadn’t brought it.

Nick had freaked out.

Again.

And I didn’t want to stick around and discuss my family matters with him.

I knew I had to takeoff immediately and get to Asher.

There was nobody else who could help him.

And talking over my shitty life with Nick was not something I was prepared to do.

A clean break was always better than a messy one.

But by Nick following me to the police station, he had made it a bit messier now.

Plus, my suitcase and all my stuff were still at his place.

I took another deep breath and slammed my car door. My feet dragged all the way to the house, delaying the inevitable.

Opening the door, I smelled the familiar homey scents.

Someone had a candle burning on the living room table.

It was one of the pumpkin spice ones I’d picked up on sale last year. They’d been a steal, so I bought a ton of them.

The fragrance of baby powder wafted up my nose. I peered down on the couch and saw a pile of the baby’s clothes freshly laundered.

I picked up a pink onesie and gave it a big sniff. “Mmm, baby,” I said to myself, loving the fresh, clean, perfect scent.

“Oh my gosh, you’re home!” Giselle said as she came down the stairs with a baby in a towel. “How did everything go?” she asked, her voice nearly quivering.

I dropped the onesie back on the pile and reached out for the baby. “Come to Auntie Evie,” I said in baby talk to Daniella. She peered over the edge of the towel and gave me a huge smile—which I returned. Then her arms and legs started to move erratically as she attempted to wiggle out of her mom’s hold.

“Fine, fine, hang on,” Giselle said, trying to wrangle Dani and hand her over.

“Aw, I think you’ve grown since I saw you last,” I said, pulling the squirming bundle from her mom’s arms.

“You haven’t even been gone a week.”

I gazed over at Giselle and smiled. “Doesn’t matter, she’s definitely bigger. Aunties can tell these things,” I said to Dani, making her squeal while she patted my head. I reached for a clean diaper from her bag, then snagged the pink onesie.
