“I didn’t take you for a rom-com kinda guy.”

“I’m full of surprises. I’d love to show you sometime.”

I laugh, grateful for the distraction, and the tension in the car begins to ease. We spend the next few minutes discussing our favorite guilty pleasure films and other things that we like, laughter filling the space between us. The conversation flows easily, and I find myself growing more comfortable in Hudson’s presence, my earlier anxiety fading into the background.

But beneath the laughter and shared confessions, the dark cloud of my financial troubles still lingers, threatening to rain down on us at any moment. It’s a reminder that I can’t escape reality, no matter how much I might wish to lose myself in the electric connection I feel with Hudson.

“I think that’s our food.” The scent of greasy, delicious fast food wafts through the air as Hudson rolls his window down, and I can’t help but feel a thrill of excitement at the prospect of indulging in this simple pleasure. The attendant hands over our bags of food, and my mouth waters as I catch a whiff of the double patty burgers we ordered.

“Here you go,” Hudson says, passing my order to me with a smile that’s equal parts charming and mischievous. “Hope you’re ready for this culinary adventure.”

“Absolutely,” I reply, grinning back at him. We find a spot in the parking lot to settle in, and the anticipation builds as we unwrap our meals. I take a big bite of the juicy burger, savoring the flavor explosion as it hits my taste buds. “Mmm, this is amazing.”

“Right?” Hudson agrees, his eyes lighting up as he enjoys his own burger. “It’s been way too long since I’ve had something like this.”

As we eat, our conversation shifts gears, moving from lighthearted banter to deeper topics. It’s easy to talk to Hudson, and I find myself opening up more than I expected.

“So, Harper,” Hudson begins, wiping his hands on a napkin. “Tell me something about yourself that not many people know.”

I hesitate for a moment, considering what to share. Finally, I decide on something that feels both personal and safe. “Well, I’ve always wanted to learn how to paint. I’ve never been particularly artistic, but there’s something about the idea of creating something beautiful from nothing that really appeals to me.”

“That’s deep,” Hudson replies thoughtfully. “I can definitely see the appeal. And who knows? Maybe one day, you’ll discover a hidden talent for it.”

“Maybe,” I agree, smiling at the thought. “What about you? Any secret dreams or hobbies?”

“Actually, yeah,” he admits, a hint of embarrassment coloring his cheeks. “I’ve always wanted to learn ballroom dancing. There’s just something about the elegance and grace of it that I find really captivating.”

“Wow, that’s unexpected,” I chuckle, genuinely surprised by his revelation. “But I can see it. You’ve got the poise and confidence for it, for sure.”

“Thanks,” he replies, his eyes meeting mine with an intensity that sends shivers down my spine. We share a charged moment of silence before he continues. “So, what’s something you’re really passionate about? Something that drives you or inspires you?”

“Right now, it’s my kids,” I confess, feeling a surge of warmth and love for my son and daughter. When I think about them, I realize just how much I miss them. “Their happiness and well-being are everything to me. I’d do anything to give them the life they deserve.”

“Your love for them is obvious,” Hudson says softly, admiration in his gaze. “It’s a beautiful thing to see. I admire that about you.”

“Thank you.” I’m touched by his words.

As we continue to eat and talk, our connection deepens, and I can’t help but feel drawn to Hudson in a way that both excites and terrifies me. The storm of my financial troubles still looms large, but for now, I allow myself to be swept up in the magic of this stolen moment, daring to hope that maybe, just maybe, there’s a silver lining waiting on the horizon.

“Man, this burger is pure heaven,” I moan between bites, savoring the tangy sauce, the crunch of lettuce, and the juicy meat.

“Agreed,” Hudson chuckles, his eyes crinkling at the corners, making him look even more irresistible. “But speaking of heaven, Harper—I can’t help but wonder how someone like you is still single. What’s the catch?”

I laugh out loud, almost choking on a fry. “Oh, there’s no catch. Just two kids who take up all my time and attention.”

“Why would that be a problem?” He cocks his head to the side. “Honestly, anyone would be lucky to have you in their life.”

“Thanks, but don’t be too sure,” I tease, reveling in the flirtatious banter. “Being a single mom isn’t exactly a selling point for most guys.”

“Harper,” Hudson says, his voice low and serious as he sets his burger down and turns to face me fully. “Let me tell you something—I’m not like every guy.” The intensity in his gaze sends my heart skipping. “I think a woman with children shows strength, love, and commitment. That’s incredibly attractive.”

His words wash over me like a tidal wave, leaving me breathless and unexpectedly moved. Before I can respond, he reaches out to gently cup my cheek, his thumb brushing against my lower lip. Our eyes lock, and for a moment, the world outside our parked car ceases to exist.

“Can I kiss you?” he whispers, his warm breath fanning across my face, making me shiver with anticipation.

“Please,” I breathe out, the word barely a sound as our lips meet in a searing, electrifying kiss. Our mouths move in perfect harmony, like two lost souls finally finding their way home. The taste of him, mixed with the remnants of our sinful meal, is intoxicating, igniting a hunger within me that has nothing to do with fast food.
