May Thirtieth

"I got a job." Ben closed the door behind him. "How did your hunt go?"

She put her phone down, "I can't find anything that pays well for me to move out anytime soon." Roxy almost begged.

"I see." He set his paper bag on the counter.

Roxy internally groaned watching him, knowing if that was his favorite hard liquor, tonight would not be fun. She observed as he pulled down the paper, 'shit.' When he drank rum, she would get multiple emotions from him. Ben would go from happy, to sad, to suicidal and back to happy all in one night. Every weekend was like it was his twenty-first birthday and he was legally allowed to drink now. But it was Monday and he was celebrating.

"I cashed my paycheck, can you put this in my safe?" His outstretched hand was holding a band of cash.

"Yes," she walked to him, "what's the code?"

Ben looked at her wildly, "You know the code."

" I didn't know if you changed it." She turned and walked away from him. She couldn't remember what it was, his birthday? Did they have an anniversary? Was it her birthday? Maybe even his mom's birthday. She walked into the bedroom and turned into the closet on the floor and next to the door was a small safe.

She stood there trying to remember. July? July seventh? She knelt down next to it and pressed zero seven zero seven. The green light came on and she heard the gears inside move. It seems as if she did know the code. Maybe she was trying to forget, not just the last five months but the last three years.

She set the money inside and looked at all the other bundles stacked. She was amazed how much he had and wasn't willing to share with her or even lend her some for a down payment on an apartment. Roxy thought twice about asking for a loan but the last time he lent her money, he didn't let it go for weeks. Would he even know if she took some without asking? She dismissed her thoughts, closed the safe and walked back into the living room.

Roxy saw Ben at the counter, his glass was already wet, meaning he had one drink down already and was pouring a second. "Did you remember anything today?" He didn't look up.

"No." She shook her head and sat on the couch, "Did you?"

"Nah." He carefully walked to the couch and handed her the remote, "here, you pick something. " He smiled.

She scrolled through the guide, passing shows she would watch and then selected his favorite comedy, hoping it would ease whatever the night was bringing.

After the first episode, he set his empty glass on the coffee table. For a normal person, he would have consumed five or six shots by now. "Would you mind giving me a refill?" He looked at her.

Roxy stood, grabbed his glass and padded to the kitchen. She thought of what could be mixed with alcohol that would be fatal. Not for her, for him. She didn't know and walked through his open concept apartment back to the couch. As she passed him, he caressed her leg, "Hey wait." Ice rolled through her at the touch of him. She looked down at Ben's eyes, slightly glazed. "Come sit by me."

Roxy dropped next to him as his arm draped around her. She knew what was coming as his hot breath stroked her face. His lanky finger pulled her chin to look at him. His eyes half closed he leaned in for a kiss. 'It's just a kiss' she thought. 'It's no different than kissing a stranger, I would kiss a stranger.'

Ben pulled back, "here." He pulled his pants down exposing himself.

“What?" She stared him in the eyes.

"Hop on."

"I'm on my period." Her eyes pleaded. "It's still a heavy flow." She was grateful to not be lying.

"Your mouth isn't on its period." He caressed her lips with his finger tips, sending nausea down her spine.

"Ben," Her eyes darted between his, "I don't want to."

"You never fucking want to. It's the least you could do for me, letting you live here for free. Some girls would be all over this. I could probably go find someone tonight who would be willing." He grabbed the lotion next to him squirting a dollop in his hand, Roxy looked away as he jerked himself off. "Hey," she turned back. "Kiss me."

Wanting to make it stop and get it over with, she leaned in to kiss him, pretending she was into it. Blocking enough of him out, she would have enjoyed it if he was someone else and she slipped her tongue into his mouth continuing to block out the noises of his hand pumping. He pulled back, "grab me a towel." Was that all it took? She was pleased that he finished and walked away wiping her own spit from the side of her mouth.

She walked back and handed Ben the towel, finding her previous spot on the couch. She noticed him finishing his third glass out of the corner of her eye. The clink hit the coffee table with a sigh from him, "Why don't you love me?"

"What do you mean? I'm here, I'm with you. Why don't you think I love you?"

"Because you never want to do anything with me, you don't even want to be on the couch next to me."

Roxy adjusted her position, "I'm just not in the mood, besides, I'm not a touchy person. You know that."
