“Yeah, a faithful husband,” He sneered. You’re one to talk, pops.

With a sigh I responded, “I never cheated on her, dad.”

“Don’t take that tone with me.Call her and fix this.”His tone was final.“Adrian!”he bellowed to his assistant.“Send in the next appointment.”My father’s face disappeared from my screen.

I pulled out my phone to call my ex-wife.

“Hello, how are you?”she answered with a chipper voice. She knows.

“I just met with my father,” I started.

“No, back up.Say hello like a human,” she chided.

“Hello, Eleanor, shall I continue with the pleasantries, or can I cut to the chase?”I opened the door to my car and dropped into the seat.

“Close enough.Let me guess, daddy saw the rags this morning?”There was a commotion in the background on her end.

“And he insisted you tell me how to fix it.”I leaned the seat back a bit.

“Well, that’s weird.I assumed I was just the occasional prop to show goodwill between the families.I assumed once I dumped you, I was the enemy.”

“Not how I remember our break-up, but he blames me for our divorce.Either way, apparently you know all and can fix this.”

“It’s just this one article, right?”

“So far.”

“Ignore it.No one believes that trash, anyway. If it escalates just explain you were escorting your ill employee home. The picture will back that story up.Congresswoman Rodrigues may have to explain why her daughter was so drunk in public her boss had to escort her home, but I really don’t think it’ll go that far.Your father is just uptight because of the election. No one gives a shit about this.”

“You don’t think Martin’s team won’t run with it?”I said of my father’s opponent.

“They may drop hints to point to the article, but they’d be stupid to make it a thing.Though they will keep a closer eye on you.So for fuck’s sake, hands off the girl in public.”

Through gritted teeth I responded, “My hands weren’t on her.We were walking. In public. This shouldn’t be an issue.”

“It was after midnight, and you were carrying her shoes.”

“I didn’t realize carrying a woman’s shoes equates to fucking her,” I groaned.

“It does when you work in politics. You should know that by now.”

I sighed, gathering my thoughts.“Is it really that bad?”

“No, I told you.Ignore this one. It’ll go away,” she answered before giving a muffled command to someone on her end of the call.

“Not that,” I paused.“Is it the worst thing to be with her?”

It was her turn to sigh.“Hang on.”The dead silence on her end indicated I had been muted.“Hey,” she said, the background noise barely noticeable.“I needed to get somewhere a bit more private. When you say you want to be with her, what does that mean? You keep telling me it can never happen.”

“That I want to be with her.I thought that was clear.”

“Yeah, but do you want to love her, or is it that you don’t want to be alone?”

“I want her to be mine, Ellie.”

“Okaay, but because you hate being alone, or because you loveher?Because I’m having a hard time deciding what’s in that head of yours.”

“Are you suggesting that I’m using her?”I asked defensively.
