“This sucks.”I knew everything she was saying was true, and it was why I kept pushing Candace away, but every day it got harder.
“I’m begging you to choose her if you love her, Mason.You know I’ll finesse the shit out of the situation if this is what you want.I want to see you happy.”
I had to either give in or remove the temptation.Now.“Yeah, I don’t think that’s gonna happen anytime soon.”

Candace
“Why did Mason Davis bring you home last night?”my mother asks casually as I entered the kitchen.My hangover wasn’t ready for this line of conversation, and I grunted in response.
My mother poured me a cup of coffee and set it in front of me on the island.“Thank you,” I managed after taking a sip.
“Are you hooking up with him?”she doubled down.
I sighed.“No, mom.He’s just my boss.”
“He went out with you for your birthday?”She lifted an eyebrow.
“No.We ended up at the same bar.I was drunk, and he saw me.He’s a decent human, so he made sure I got home in one piece.”
“There is a tabloid claiming you two are an item.”
“Does it also have a verified sighting of Bigfoot?”I grumbled.
“Hm, probably,” she considered.
“Don’t you think if I hooked up with Mason last night, he would’ve brought me to his house and not all the way out here to my parent’s house?”
“He brought you to your room.”
“Since you were clearly paying attention, you must have noticed he left almost immediately.He made sure I made it to my room without waking the entire house and then went home.”
“You could’ve caused him a giant headache.You need to be more careful about your actions.They reflect upon him.”
I’m well aware.“Got it, mom.No flirting my way to crumbling a political dynasty.”My head pounded with my hangover combined with an increase in blood pressure.What the fuck, mom?
“I’m just saying, you need to be careful.His family is far more scrutinized than ours.You are there to mind Wyatt, not his father.”She leveled a disappointed look at me.
“First, that’s crap.Mason is a grown adult.He should be free to do whatever he pleases within the limits of the law, just like everyone else.Second, I’m not doing anything to compromise his reputation.”Anymore.“Last night was my twenty-first birthday.Going out and getting drunk is basically a requirement.”
“Just don’t make a habit of it.Make good choices.”
“Yes, mama.”I put my empty mug in the sink and turned to make my way back upstairs to take a shower.
“And, Candi,” my mom called after me.I turned to look at her.“I don’t know what is going on with you and Mason, but I hope you’ll trust that your father and I are on your side.Always.”
