He cleared his throat.“It is necessary. With the pictures, I need to make it clear you were just Wyatt’s caregiver.Nothing more.”

I was dumbfounded.“That’s it?You’re dismissing me?”

“Candace, you knew this was a temporary position. When Catherine and Wyatt move back up next month, she already said you can see him whenever you want. And he has his ‘hi-pad’ you can call him.”

“And what if I want to see you?”I stared into his eyes. Now or never.

“Candace.”

I internally cursed my traitorous emotions as I felt a tear fall down my cheek.“Because of pictures in a tabloid? No one even believes that shit, Mason.”

“It’s the way it needs to be.”

“Did you ever care?”I blinked back the burning tears that threatened to fall.“After the way you behaved at the club, I thought maybe we could be more.”

He pulled at the back of his neck.“It can’t be.I’m sorry.”

“Why?Why can’t it?”I asked with a shaky voice.

“The public will never accept this. It’ll ruin my father’s campaign. He’ll kill me.”

“Your father?”I spat.“You’re lettinghimcall the shots here?Tell him to go fuck himself, Mason.”

“You’re being immature right now.”

I saw red.“Me?!I’m being immature? You’re a thirty-two-year-old man with a child and you’re letting yourdaddyrun your life.Might I remind you that same father is the reason your kid calls you by your first name.”Mason flinched.“When are you going to pull your head out of your ass and make your own decisions?”

“We’re done here,” he announced.

“Yes.We are.”I stormed to the door, slamming it behind myself before I peeled out of the driveway toward home.

Chapter28

Mason

She slammed the door and was gone before I got the good sense to chase her.

Let her go.It’s what you need to do.

So why did my whole body ache?I dropped back down onto the couch and put my head in my hands to gather my wits.I grabbed my phone from my pocket and hit Catherine’s name.

“Hey, I got the stuff you wanted from the house. You ready to head back down? There’s some stuff I need to do in the office.”

“Sure.You okay?You sound upset?”she asked.

“I’m fine.Just got a lot to do.I’ll pick you up in an hour.”

“She didn’t wantto pack her own stuff? What did you do, Mason Davis?”Catherine chided from the bedroom floor as she pulled Candace’s clothes from the dresser and put them in boxes.

“There were extenuating circumstances,” I replied vaguely.

“Like what?”she huffed.

“There was some bad press.”

“Bullshit.I would’ve seen it.Where?”

I walked out of the room to avoid the conversation, but Catherine chased me into the living room.“What bad press, Mason? And what did it have to do with Candi?”
