“You did marry Mason, of all people,” I pointed out.

Her nose scrunched. “He’s gonna make a good husband to some woman someday. Just, preferably not me.”

“You know he’s screwing the nanny, right? Something tells me he’s not in any rush to get remarried either,” I said. I wasn’t sure what Mason and Candi’s actual relationship status was, but they weren’t great at hiding the fact that something was going on.

“I know all about Mason and Candace. And you shouldn’t dismiss that situation so quickly. I think he really likes her.”

I was dumbstruck. I had assumed it was a big secret. I spent far more time around the two of them, especially since Elle had been on tour for the last three months, and yet she knew the details. “Do you two talk about these things?”

“We’re still friends, Cee. He doesn’t have many friends he can confide in. It’s always just been the two of us. And now Silas.”

“And Silas?” That had me shook. I thought the two of them were going to have a physical fight over my sister just a year ago. Things had changed so much while I was busy being caught up in my own misery.

“I have to say, though, the most dapper boy in that room belongs to you, Cee.” I must have looked shocked at Elle calling Sergio mine, because she clarified. “Wyatt is the cutest fucking ring bearer this world has ever seen.” Oh. Right. My kid. “Did you think I meant someone else?” Elle lifted an eyebrow.

Jo and Mish looked on curiously. I cleared my throat. “Nope. Wyatt is my only guy.”

“Well, in case you’re wondering, Sergio looks pretty damn good, too. Especially sitting on the floor playing with Wyatt.”

“Since Sergio is a giant child, I’m not surprised,” I deflected.

“I didn’t realize they were besties,” Elle kept pushing.

“They spent a lot of time together while Eli was sick. Wyatt got attached.” Elle’s eyes on mine went from accusatory to soft.

“I’m sorry. I was out of line.”

I wiped a tear from the corner of my eye before it could ruin my makeup. “It’s fine. I get it.”

The actual wedding coordinator soon arrived to round us up for our trip down the aisle. I wasn’t sure if it was the quick mention of Eli just before or if it was the actual act of walking down an aisle that gave me the pang of sadness, but I thought I was going to cry before I made it to the altar.

Just as I was about to, I looked over at Sergio, who was staring at me intently, and I calmed down.

I should’ve married Eli when he offered. I refocused on Mish as soon as I was standing in my designated place. Looking between her and Connor, I got teary for a different reason. This was a happy one. One of my best friends was getting married today.

Just in front of her was Wyatt, tossing flower petals all over the place in lieu of a flower girl. Elle was right, he was absolutely the most handsome one of the bunch. When he reached the altar, he took a bow, as if he was the main attraction, and then sat on his ass in front of Sergio. Not wanting my kid to upstage the bride, Sergio scooped Wyatt up off the floor and held him there, whispering something into his ear. Wyatt beamed.

Once the bride and groom began the ceremony, I looked back to Sergio. His eyes were on me. He mouthed, “You okay?” and I nodded back. He whispered in Wyatt’s ear again and Wyatt smiled in my direction and waved.

“Hi, Mommy! I frew the flowers,” my child spoke over the officiant. Everyone laughed. So much for him not being the center of attention.

The ceremony went by quickly, with no more interruptions from Wyatt. By the process of natural pairing off, Elle and Silas followed Connor and Mish up the aisle, with Jo and Beth right behind them. As I took Sergio’s free arm, Wyatt wiggled in his other.

“I need to pick up the mess,” Wyatt explained to us, pointing at the petals on the floor.

“It’s okay, buddy. You get a pass on this one,” I laughed.

We had a long set of photos before being ushered off to the reception. Wyatt stuck to Sergio like an extension of his body. I felt guilt crawl up my spine once again. Eli should be the one with him. I wiped away a tear. Eli didn’t want this for either Wyatt or me. He wanted us to be happy. The reminder to myself didn’t stop me from missing him and wishing he was there but helped tamp down the guilt.

“Promise me you’ll live, Katie,” Eli’s voice echoed in my head.

“Have I told you that you look stunning this evening, bestie?” Sergio sat beside me while Wyatt danced with Silas and Elle.

My lips slowly formed into a smile. “You are looking quite handsome yourself, bestie.”

He gave me a sideways glance. “Thanks.”

“My kid is the best looking male here, though, so don’t let that go to your head.”
