“No.” I kept my voice in a whisper. I didn’t know what to say. It was hauntingly beautiful. I had known for a long time now that he loved me, but this was more than I expected. “Can we be alone?” I asked loud enough for the room to hear me.

Everyone but Sergio filed out silently. As soon as they were gone, he said, “I’m so sorry. I didn’t even want you to know about it.”

“Shut up,” I said. “It’s fucking unbelievable. Of course, it should go on the album. I can’t believe you did that.” I was so overcome with emotion I wasn’t sure what else to say.

“They are gonna want to add it to the set list,” he explained.

“Thank you.”

“Thank me?” He scrunched up his face.

“Yes. I love you, and I love the song.”

Seventy-Five

Cee

The Wrong Time jumped to the top of the charts as soon as they released it. A week into the tour, while Wyatt was with us, the band played the song live. Wyatt bounced on the side of the stage, a mix of too much sugar and excitement coursing through his little body.

The performance was unlike most. The guys decided it was the perfect show to drag some of us on stage to introduce us properly. Connor called Mish out first. “You’ve all seen pictures of my wife. Mish, come say hi to everyone” He kissed her cheek when she reached him at the front of the stage. “Then we have the power couple that handles all of our logistics and finances. Say hi to Len and Silas!”

Elle and Silas waved to the fans. Then Sergio came out from behind the drum kit. I looked at him and then Wyatt. Both wore bright pink shorts with fish on them and t-shirts. Neither wore shoes. Wyatt had on a large pair of noise-canceling headphones.

Sergio grabbed a microphone from in front of Tom, a shit-eating grin on everyone’s faces. “Wyatt, can you bring your mom out here?” He held an arm out to the side of the stage. I took Wyatt’s hand and walked out onto the stage, my heart thrumming in my chest. “This is Wyatt. He’s kind of big deal because his grandfather is the President right now.” Wyatt gave his best electoral wave.

“Some of you know his mom, our assistant, Cee. She is the one who reminds us where we are, where we are going, and sometimes what our names are.” He kissed my cheek. “More importantly, though, she’s my girlfriend.”

I could feel my cheeks turning a flaming red, and it wasn’t because of the bright stage lighting.

He walked me to the front edge of the stage. “Cee, you remember our friends, don’t you?” He pointed into the front row where the groupies stood cheering. “Ladies, I believe you have a message for Cee.”

Each of the three women held a sign.

MARRY

HIM

CEE!

I turned to look at Sergio, blood rushing in my ears.

He leaned in to talk in my ear. “What do you say, Kate? Wanna marry me?”

It wasn’t the first time he had brought up marriage, but I did not expect such an elaborate proposal. “Like, today?” I asked him. Since he was holding the microphone away, I was pretty sure no-one could hear me.

He chuckled. “Or tomorrow. Or in ten years?” I nodded, my whole body shaking. “Do you want to share our news with everyone?” I nodded again. He looked out at the crowd. “This beautiful woman just agreed to marry me!”

Cheers erupted from the crowd. My sister and Mish jumped up and down.

“Give me a minute to make sure she’s still breathing, and I’ll be right back, okay?” he told the fans before leading Wyatt and me to the side of the stage.

Before we were quite offstage, Wyatt looked up to Sergio and asked, “So you’ll be my dad, right?”

Everyone within earshot looked at him. “Wy, we talked about this. Mason is your dad. I’ll be your stepdad.”

“Yeah, but it’s funnier if I call you dad and not him.” Wyatt flashed a sly smile.

“You talked to him about this?” I asked Sergio, pointing to Wyatt.
