I gave him a pitiful look. “After. Silas asked her to meet him. They said their goodbyes, and she cried in the fucking sand. I don’t know that I’d ever seen her cry before that.”

“Well, don’t I feel like shit. I literally made her promise not to back out just before that.” He rubbed the back of his neck.

“She hasn’t seen him since, if you’re worried.”

“No, she has. And since then, it’s only made things worse. She doesn’t even try to hide her misery at home anymore.”

My brows furrowed. That didn’t sound like her at all. “I don’t think she’d go behind your back like that. She loves him, but she’s still your friend and loyal as hell.”

“She didn’t go behind my back. When your dad died, he came by. I told her to go to him. I wasn’t sure she would come back, honestly. But again, she’s Elle, and she did. And she’s a fucking mess. She wears sweatpants and leggings at home, Cee.”

Wow. I couldn’t remember seeing Elle in sweatpants ever, and the only thing close to leggings I ever saw her in were her Lululemon workout clothes she wore to barre class. I tried to take it all in. “What does this have to do with me?”

“You said it already. We’re barely married. I need a reason for her to be free of the marriage that the press won’t fault her for. She needs to know about Wyatt. Hell, I want everyone to know about Wyatt. She wants Silas, and I’m missing my kid growing up. We all win here when this comes out.”

Well, shit. “Yeah. Yeah, of course. We always agreed that you would be a part of his life. I’d like to keep the media out of it as much as possible, but I understand your position and that this will be a bomb. I just ask that we protect him.”

“Of course! We will make this as easy as possible on everyone. I just want to turn this around. Correct the course. I’m sick of hiding.”

“Yeah, okay.” My voice shook.

“Yeah?” His brown eyes sparkled with hope.

“Are you going to fight me for custody, Mason?”

“What? No! I want to see him, but I’m not looking to take him away. It would be impossible with my Congressional schedule. I’d like to take him when I’m home. We will plan it in advance, no surprises.”

I could live with this, right? Did I have a choice?

“Yeah, okay.”

“Really? Because you don’t sound okay, and I don’t need to crush another woman with my demands.”

“It’s fine, Mason.” She’s going to hate me. She should hate me.

“It’s not, but hopefully she will be okay with releasing this information now after all this time.”

It was a curious comment. Is it possible she knows? Did he tell her? I just nodded.

Sixteen

Not only was my sister having issues letting go of Silas, but he had also hit a whole new level of pining. This became the topic of nearly every text I got from anyone in the band.

Sergio: Do you have the chisme?

Me: chisme?

Sergio: the gossip. the tea.

Me: I know what chisme is…I took Spanish. What tea should I have to spill

Sergio: Your sister and Silas

Me: All I know is they saw each other after my dad’s funeral and next thing I knew, he was sending everyone drunk text messages with songs about how he hates her.

Sergio: You think they fucked?

I knew they had. Mason had confirmed it.
