He nodded.

“So do I. Brett has a dog. Maybe we can bring him over so you could meet him.”

A smile pulled at his mouth as he glanced at his grandfather as if asking if that would be all right.

“That’s an excellent plan.” Walter motioned for everyone to take their seats.

Dania handed the paper back to Jacob.

He shook his head. “You can have it.”

A wave of emotion welled up within her. “Thank you so much. I’ll always cherish it.” She’d frame it and set it beside her bed so the drawing was the first thing she saw when she got up in the morning and the last thing before she closed her eyes at night.

Jacob scampered to the other side of the table, where a booster seat had been placed on a chair. She’d wanted to sit by him, but that would happen later. For now, Dania was going to enjoy being in the same room with her son. She slipped into the seat next to Brett and smiled at him. She hadn’t been this happy in years. And although she hadn’t been able to hug her son, kiss him on the forehead, or take him home with her, those would all come eventually. She laid the picture next to her plate.

Yes, it would come.

Brett reached over and squeezed her hand.

She had everything she needed in her life, and her future looked bright. And most importantly, she had the family she’d always wanted.
