The only hope I have is that Parker sees my email before he hears about what is on the news.

My thoughts are interrupted by the sound of the ding of the elevator reaching the penthouse level.

Standing up, I make my way over to the elevator doors.

They slowly open and I am met with Parker’s emerald green eyes.

“What are you doing here?”Are the first words that pop out of my mouth.

Parker looks me up and down.

Seeing the look of shock and disappointment on his face causes me to break down.

“Parker, I am so sorry. I swear I had no idea who you were when I took this job and now the news is spreading rumors about us,” I cry out.

Tears flow down my cheeks freely as I fall to my knees. My heart aches as I cry into my hands. How can I be so dumb as to think that Parker will forgive me? He must be livid.

I feel a set of warm hands on my shoulders, “Cam, don’t cry.Didn’t you get my email?”

Shaking my head, I sniffle, “No, but have you seen the news?”

The thought that he emailed me back makes the tears stop but then I think of the news. There is no way things between us can return to normal after such jarring news.

“I did,” Parker says helping me stand.

The feel of his hands on my arms causes my heart to race but I cannot focus on that feeling when I am scared for my future.

“And?” I ask, biting my lip.

Parker’s gaze follows my actions and I see him swallow. My eyes go to his adams apple and watch it jump up and down as he swallows. My knees buckle again but this time, Parker catches me.

“Cam you need to calm down, let us sit.”

Parker leads me back into the living room and we take a seat on the couch. I pull up his email on my phone and read it.

He forgives me and understands. He even apologizes.

I glance up at Parker but his eyes are glued to the television. I follow his gaze and see yet another picture of the three of us at the mall. We look cozy but I know the truth. We just ran into one another on my day off. There is nothing romantic or scandalous going on between us.

“Are you upset with me?” I whisper. “I swear I had nothing to do with this.”

Parker just keeps his eyes pealed on the television, “I know and I believe you. They call you a mystery woman. Which clearly means they don’t know who you are or who you really are to me. The news is just running wild with this story.”

I nod. Parker has a point. The media does not know who I am but how long will that last?

“What are we going to do? How will we fix this?”

I am hoping Parker says it will blow over and we will either ignore it or admit that I am just his nanny but the next words out of his mouth startle me.

“We could pretend to be together,” Parker says, finally looking at me.

My mouth drops open in a wide O. There is no way I hear him correctly. It sounds like he wants us to pretend to be together.

“I don’t understand. Why would we do that?” I ask confused beyond compare.

Parker turns fully towards me and takes my hand in his.

“You don’t have to do this but it would help me and my career.”
