At the sound of the question, a little voice said, “Here I am.”

I walk toward the voice and on the floor, with her feet in the air and crayon in hand, a smiling, pink-cheeked girl looks up from her coloring book. Her curls were separated into pigtails. She was cute as a button.

“Hello Maisey, I’m Miss Schriefer, I’ll be your new nanny. Are you ok with that?”

Maisey gets up and walks over to me, stopping just a few feet away. She looks up, her eyes assessing whether or not I’m worthy. I hold her gaze and give her a smile as I kneel down to her height. She follows me with her eyes.

“Do you like stuffed animals?” She asks.

“I do.”

“Do you like tea time?”

“I do.”

She looks at me seriously and then nods her head. “Yes, I’m ok with that.”

We smile at each other until Miss Baily announces that we have some things to attend to before I officially start the day.

“I’ll see you soon Maisey,” I say as I wave goodbye to her.

I follow Miss Baily out the door. Miss Baily explains the rules of the house to me and what is expected of me.

“You are to follow these rules exactly. If you do, you will find that working for Mr. Madison is a great pleasure. He is a splendid boss but he can be strict with the rules.”

I nod in understanding before I am led back to Maisey.

Maisey and I spent the rest of the day getting to know one another. We talked and colored together and she told me the names of all her stuffed animals and showed me which ones were her favorites. She showed me all her toys and books.

I ooh and aah over everything and ask questions that she answers politely. Lunchtime came and we had some fruit and cheese and then it was naptime.

While Maisely slept, I put away my belongings and marveled at the luxury I would be living in. I’ve never been materialistic. I buy only what I need. As a nanny, especially a live-in one, you don’t get much room to call your own. This, however, I could make my own. The muted palette matched the rest of the home. I could add some color, and create a personal space just for me. Maybe I’ll tell the agency to give the apartment to someone else.

Thoughts of the little girl down the hall crept in. She was bright-eyed and seemed very happy. Her father taught her good manners, which is a bonus. It’s hard when you nanny for parents who are not involved in raising their children. It seems as though this elusive Mr. Madison is quite involved, which will make my job easier. I smile and think, yes Maisey and I will get along just fine.

Chapter 2 - Parker Madison

“Hey, Cynthia. What time is my first meeting today?” I ask my assistant on the phone as I am rushing to get myself ready for work.

I can always count on my assistant to be in early. It really helps take the stress off of me when I’m running late, which is usually most days. My daughter Maisey keeps me on my toes. I can’t wait til the agency I hired finds me a good nanny. Not that I need to work more, but it will free me up to focus on the big-ticket items of my business that I don’t get to do during the day. I’m mostly in meetings, on the phone in a meeting, or on my computer, you guessed it, in a meeting.

“Good morning Mr. Madison. Your first appointment is at nine a.m. with Miss Gloria Acosta, a representative for Digital Chips, Inc.”

“Great. I’m running late as usual. If she arrives before I do, set her up in the conference room. Make sure she has refreshments as well.”

“Sure thing.”

Just as I hang up the phone with Cynthia, my phone pings alerting me to another call.

“This is Parker Madison, how can I help you?”

“Good morning Mr. Madison, this is Shantal from the nanny agency calling to let you know that we have hired someone and she will be starting with you today,” a deep female voice said through the phone surprising me.

“Fantastic. Can you send over her credentials, please?” I ask, knowing that I need to make sure that the new nanny isqualified. I have had numerous nannies over the past years and I just hope for the perfect one for Maisey.

“Absolutely. We will send those over right away.”

“Thank you so much for hiring someone so quickly.”
