Leaning down, I whisper into Maisey’s ear, “I love you. Now be a good girl for your dad.”

Maisey nods in my arms before letting go and running back to her father.

“Bye, Cam,” Parker says, finally speaking to me and my heart soars.

Just two words help turn my day around.

I call Parker’s driver and he comes and gets me. I stare out the window as the upscale side of New York City turns into the more rundown side as we get closer to my apartment.

Thoughts of Maisey calling me mommy are invading my brain. I admit to myself that I liked being called her mommy. It felt right and seeing Parker not correct her made me feel light, like I was on top of the world. And Parker finally spoke to me. Wow. It must mean today is going to be a good day.

We finally made it to my apartment and I hardly noticed as my brain was preoccupied.

The building is still tall and made of brick but there is something eerie in the air. It’s as if I have gotten so used to the pleasantries of living in a penthouse that this apartment seems even more rundown.

I step out of the car, “I will only be a few minutes. If you could wait for me?”

The driver nods at me and I head up the stairs towards my floor. As I walk from the car to my apartment I stop and look around, it feels as if someone is watching me but I see no one around. It must just be my nerves.

As I trudge the stairs up to my floor, I hear a door slam below me and am again overcome with the sense that someone is there but as I listen, I am met with silence.

Relax, Camdyn. No one is following you. You are safe.

Shaking my head, I keep walking until I get to my floor. The atmosphere up here feels tight but I ignore it.

Putting my keys in the lock, I see that the door is slightly ajar which makes my blood run cold. Why is the door unlocked and open a bit?

I push the door open. The apartment is just as small as I remember with everything in the same room, except for the bedroom which is its own room, but something seems amiss.

The small furniture I have is turned over and all the belongings I left behind are scattered around the apartment. My clothes are in an array and the lockbox my money was in is open and upside down in the center of the room.

Someone or some people must have broken into my apartment and ransacked it.

Who would do such a thing?

I live on a higher floor and it is not easy to get into. Whoever did this had to either target me or live in this building and know that I am gone.

My heart starts to race as I hear a noise behind me.

What if whoever did this is still here?

I have no will to fight in me as I am overcome with fear.

What should I do?

I turn around, expecting to be faced with an intruder but I fall into the open arms in front of me.

It is just Parker.

My heart calms at the sight of him and the feel of his arms around me.

“What are you doing here?” I gasp out as I hold him tightly.

“It’s okay. You are safe. I had a bad feeling and followed you out here. Something just tugged at my gut and told me to check on you, so I followed you. I’m sorry for invading your privacy but I am glad I did.”

I don’t even care about him following me, I am just glad that he is here. Being in his arms makes me feel safe.

“What about Maisey?”
