“What did she say to you two?” Ronnie asks as he bites at his fingernails.

I shake my head and shrug. I can tell Ronnie is on edge and I’m glad for that. Whoever did this did it under his watch. For the area this apartment is located and for how many apartments there are they should really have some better security.

Once Officer Yang is done with Cam she asks to talk to me.

“So, Mr. Madison. What were you doing here today?”

I swallow, “Cam is my fiancée and I had a bad gut feeling so I came to her apartment. I found her in her apartment and everything was a mess.”

She nods as she writes down everything that I’m saying.

“I know Ms. Schriefer is newer in town but do you know of anyone who would want to harm her?”

Her question throws me off guard. This was a break in. What does that have to do with harming Cam?

“No,” I say. “Cam is the sweetest person. No one would want to harm her.”

“Okay, thank you for your time Mr. Madison. You and Ms. Schriefer can go. I am just going to interview the property manager and I will file this report.”

“Thank you Officer,” I say before Cam grabs my hand and leads me away.

We stand outside her apartment building as we wait for my driver to return.

“How are you holding up?” I ask Cam.

She leans into me, “I just want to get home.”

My heart rate speeds up at the word home. Cam sees the penthouse as her home now. As she should.

The car pulls up and we get in the back.

“I think you should call the nannying organization and let them know that you no longer need the apartment,” I say.

Cam nods and does just that. I listen in as she talks to Shantal.

“Hi, Shantal, this is Camdyn. I wanted to inform you that there was a break in at my apartment… Yes I am okay and I submitted a police report… I no longer need an apartment as I’m going to be staying at Mr. Madison’s indefinitely… Thank you.”

Once Cam hangs up she throws her head back against the headrest.

“I just can’t wait to get home and relax. Today did not go how I was hoping or expecting it would.”

I know what she meant. While my gut told me something was amiss, I did not expect to walk in on a crime scene or to have to file a police report today. Thinking about the police, it made me recall Officer Yang’s question about who would want to hurt Cam. Did she suspect that someone Cam knew did this?

“Yeah, we do have some things we should talk about once we get home but that can wait until we get Maisey.”

Cam nods and lays her head on my shoulder. She sleeps the rest of the short drive to the penthouse.

As we get in the elevator, I press floor eight.

“What’s on the eighth floor?” Cam asks.

“Maisey.”

Cam nods and we hold hands the entire elevator ride. I keep my gaze straight ahead, not wanting to get too much in my head. I knew that I have been ignoring Cam but after today, I don’t think I can ignore her anymore. I care for her too much.

Getting off the elevator, we walk down the hall and turn left and reach door eight thirty one. I reach up and knock twice and the door opens.
