“Why don’t we go out for tacos?” I interrupt the pair.

“Daddy!” Maisey yells as she runs to me.

I sweep her up in my arms and twirl her around the kitchen.

“Tacos sound awesome!” Maisey screeches as we twirl.

Stopping, I set Maisey down and look at Cam, “Care to join us?”

Cam looks around the kitchen as if wondering what she can make herself before looking at me and beaming.

“Tacos would be nice.”

“Great. I know a good food truck just a few blocks from here that we can try.”

“Let me change real quick,” Cam says as she runs off to her bedroom.

“Changing time!” Maisey grabs my hand and takes me to her room. She runs into her closet and pulls out an orange dress. Orange was her mothers favorite color and makes me pause.

“What do you think daddy?” Maisey twirls around and shows off her dress.

Swallowing, I smile at my daughter.

“You are so pretty my dear,” I say, meaning every word.

Maisey is the prettiest girl on the planet and she got it from her mother.

“Thanks daddy, let's go. I’m hungry!”

Maisey rushes out of her bedroom and I follow her. We make it to the living room and then we see Cam. She has changed into a floorlength purple flowery maxi dress that will stun as we walk the streets of New York City.

“Are you two ready?” Cam asks.

“Yes, Maisey just wanted to get into something cute. Just like you,” I say with a wink.

Cam shoots me a grin before posing. Her hands in peace signs and her lips pouted. She looks absolutely adorable.

“Come on daddy! Come on Mommy! It’s taco time!” Maisey yells pulling on my hand.

I freeze at her calling Cam mommy again but I cannot help but feel warm inside at her words. She sees Cam as a mother figure and it is truly sweet yet something inside me also twists in pain. I miss Maisey’s mother more than anything and hearing Maisey call Cam mommy hits me in the gut and heart. I just don’t want Maisey to forget about her mom but I also know that Cam will make a great mother to Maisey.

Cam gives me a strange look. Her eyes are wide but she has a weird grin on her face as if she does not know how to react when Maisey refers to her as mommy.

‘It’s okay’ I mouth to her over Maisey’s head and Cam’s face relaxes and smiles at me.

We head to the elevator and head down to the first floor. Both of my hands are being held by the two most important women in my life. It hits me hard realizing just how important Cam has become in my life. I wake up thinking about her and fall asleep with her in my mind.

I squeeze both of their hands and beam down at my daughter.

The elevator dings and we exit.

The food truck I am picturing is about three blocks down the street and we walk there making small talk about our days.

Maisey tells me how she is learning pluses and minuses while Cam tells me how good of a job Maisey is doing with all of her school work.

“I know all my plus and minuses all the way up to a million!” Maisey exclaims as she jumps up and down next to me.

“That’s great, sweetie. I am so proud of you. And Cam, you must be a great teacher.”
