Something that closely resembled disappointment bloomed inside my chest, but no… that couldn’t be right. As I tried to mentally shake off whatever it was that I was feeling, I almost missed Ace walking away. His hand hovered near the doorknob.

“Goodnight,” Ace said, and after giving me one last fleeting look, he disappeared through the doorway.

“Goodnight,” I murmured a few moments later, but he was already gone.

“You got it!” I cheered loudly when I saw Jack walking in with a paper bag in his hands. With enthusiasm, I skipped over to the dining room and settled at the table.

“I love you so much right now. You’re my favorite!”

Jack’s mouth quirked up at one corner as he placed the bag in front of me and fetched a spoon out of the drawer.

“Are you speaking to me or the ice cream?”

Consumed by anticipation, I hastily lifted the lid off the tub, not wasting a moment before grabbing the spoon and enthusiastically delving in.

“Both,” I responded with a mouthful of chocolate ice cream in my mouth.

Jack chuckled.

I had casually mentioned to him earlier in passing that I was craving ice cream, but because they were total health freaks, we didn’t have any in the house. He didn’t say anything then and just he got up and left. Who could have guessed that he’d come back a couple of minutes later with the ice cream in hand?

He really was great sometimes.

“Oh, this really hits the spot.” I sighed around the delicious goodness in my mouth, though, I couldn’t for the life of me remember when I had told him what my favorite kind was.

Noticing his gaze on me, I extended the spoon towards him. “Try some.”

Jack’s nose wrinkled in distaste. “I don’t think so. It’s too sweet for me.”

“God knows you could use some sweetness in your life.” I grinned at him, keeping the spoon still raised in the air. “How do you know it’s too sweet if you won’t even try it?”

Jack continued to look doubtful, but I persisted.

“Come on, just a taste…” I pleaded again, and he finally gave in with a sigh.

“Fine. Just onelick.”

Placing his hands on the table, he leaned forward. I held out the spoon and carefully brought it up to his mouth.

“And?” I asked.

Jack liked his lips, and my eyes tracked the motion. As soon as I realized what I was doing, I immediately looked away. What was it with me lately? I’d been noticing my eyes lingering on them for a beat too long than they should have. I started to worry about my own behavior.

“As I said. It’s too sweet.” Jack broke through my reverie, delivering his verdict.

I let out a disbelieving huff, thankful for the distraction. “You just have a terrible taste then.”

“Don’t make me take the ice cream back, girl,” Jack jokingly warned.

I pursed my lips. “I find it very annoying when you call me that.”

“What? Girl?”

I hummed ayesagainst the spoon.

It reminded me of Francesco. He always used to call me that.
