Yeah, we should probably do that.

They weren’t princes, anyway.

No prince had a briefcase full of torture devices. No prince slept with a gun under his pillow or had so much blood on his hands.

Then again, I wasn’t that much of a princess either.

* * *

I was just about to make my way over to the kitchen and fetch myself a glass of water when the sound of the front door opening caught my attention. I didn’t think too much about it, however.

The guys had informed me that they’d be gone for the entire day, but it wasn’t too uncommon for one of them to pop back home for an hour or two.

That was why it took me a few seconds to feel the hairs standing at the back of my neck, my subconsciousness warning me that something wasn’t quite right before my brain became fully aware.

I turned around and then, almost involuntarily, took a step back.

My instincts had been right.

It hadn’t been one of the guys who came home.

An unfamiliar man was standing at the doorway with his arms crossed across his chest, eyeing me like someone would examine an exotic animal at the zoo.

Curious and intrigued.

“Well, would you look at that…” he mused, his green eyes glinting with something that I couldn’t decipher.

When he didn’t say anything more, I opened my dry mouth to ask, “Who are you?”

The stranger acted like he didn’t even hear my question.

“You know, I didn’t believe it at first when I heard that there had been a girl spotted around here.” His eyes scanned me from head to toe, almost as if he was sizing me up. “But yet here you are, in the flesh.”

Alarm bells rang in my ears.

Those were the sharp eyes of a shark who caught a whiff of blood in the water and was now seeking its source. Of someone who wanted to pull on the thread and unveil a tantalizing secret.

“I’ll ask again. Who are you?”

And even more importantly —did he know who I was?

The man laughed, and the sound might have even sounded nice if it hadn’t been drowned out by the rapid thumping of my heartbeat.

“Oh, I apologize. How rude of me. I still haven’t introduced myself, have I? My name is Lorenzo. I’m a coworker of your… friends.” A specific tone of delight accompanied the final word. “I just wanted to check in on them, see how they were doing after the attack. But now I see that they have everything under control.”

The man’s face maintained that same little, amused expression that had been present throughout this entire interaction.

“I’ll take my leave, now. I don’t wish to take any more of your time.” He smiled at me like the cat who got the cream, before turning around and walking out of the door.

Should I let him go?

I could try and stop him, but I was weaponless — and even if I hadn’t been, who knew who he was?

Maybe he was someone important and killing him would make the whole situation even worse, though I couldn’t see how much worse it could get.

He most definitely knew who I was.

I could see it written all over his face. If he thought that I was just an acquaintance, he wouldn’t have looked so gleeful.
