It wouldn’t surprise me if he was on his way to tell the news to the Don at this exact moment. Unfortunately, I was unable to contact the guys and warn them about what was going to happen. I doubted that it could do them much good, anyway.

I had no choice but to wait for them to get home.

I had a feeling that things just got a lot more complicated.

Alessio

“Don’t slouch.”

Madam Alfera’s sharp words sliced through my reverie.

I instinctively straightened my back before my mind even caught up to what I was doing.

She looked at me, her mouth pressed in a thin, displeased line. “What is it? You’ve been sulking for days now. You better not let that distract you from your work.”

“Of course not, ma’am,” I said, defensively.

Why was I the only person whom she warned like this? I’d never heard her say something like that to King or Jack.

Mada Alfera humphed, clearly disbelieving. “So.. what is it that has got you acting this way, then?”

I rapped my knuckles on the smooth tabletop, creating hollow thuds. It wasn’t like I could actually tell her what — or better said, who — was on my mind these last couple of days. She might actually shoot me if she ever got a word about Blondie.

“I just haven’t been sleeping very well lately. That’s all.”

Madam Alferatsked. “That’s not good. You should constantly be aware of your surroundings. How do you think to do that if you’re falling asleep on your feet.”

I wanted to argue that my situational awareness was fine, thank you very much, but she was still going.

“That’s the reason the three of you got forced out of your own home last week. If you had been more alert and prepared, that wouldn’t have happened. "

I frowned. “There were like thirty men coming at us at the same time. I think the fact that we’re still alive and completely unharmed is more important.”

It wasn’t like a person could be prepared for a surprise attack.

Hence the name —it wasn’t announced in advance.

But it seemed that this wasn’t enough for her.

“If you are satisfied with the bare minimum, then it is.”

I swallowed down whatever argument I wanted to say next.

Don’t try and make excuses, Alessio. All I want to see are results.

The memory of her hand smacking the back of my head whenever I used to get too mouthy came rushing back

Before I could try and move the conversation to something else, a guard came up behind Madam Alfera and bent down to say something in her ear.

A few seconds later, she looked at him and nodded.

“What was that about?” I asked, not really expecting her to answer.

She used to say that one of her biggest failures was that she still hadn’t managed to completely beat the curiosity out of me. I didn’t take it to heart, though. I knew that her complaints often came out of a place of fondness and concern. For however much she denied it, she got used to my brothers and me.

But to my surprise, madam Alfera actually answered. “The Don wants to see you.”
