For Levi’s sake.

“Hmm. I guess that’s fine. When?” Maggie didn’t want to disclose that she had a time crunch. Technically, her last day wasn’t until December 31, but church offices were closed in the last week of December, and she’d planned to use those days to move from Georgia to Florida.

“Whenever you want.” Alden gave her a quick smile.

“The sooner, the better. Before Christmas, preferably.”

“In a hurry, are we?”

“My friend is.” Or maybe Maggie was too. Perhaps once Levi was taken, Maggie could move on.

Move on?

It felt impossible at this time, but nothing was impossible with God, after all.

Chapter Four

Levi almost forgot to pray for God’s perfect will as he waited impatiently for Saturday to come. By Wednesday he was too anxious to focus on work at the warehouse.

With all the overtime he’d had, he left work early and picked up Maggie from Midtown Chapel at five o’clock on the dot and they went to a nearby mall to get him some new clothes he could wear to the Singles Ministry Christmas dinner.

It was going to be a catered dinner, and he didn’t want to look underdressed. He wanted to impress Forsythia, most of all, since the chef had been to formal events and had no doubt acquired an impeccable taste.

But this party wasn’t that formal. That was why he needed Maggie’s help.

They walked toward a designer store on the second floor of the mall, and Levi was hurrying Maggie along. He stepped back and grabbed her hand and pulled her forward.

Maggie twisted her hand out of Levi’s. “I gather that you want us to get back to church for supper, right?”

“Since you’re my shopping assistant today, I’ll take you to dinner at the food court.”

“Will we still make it to the midweek service?”

“I think I can get us back there by seven.”

Maggie followed Levi as he walked among the racks of jackets.

“What about this one?” Levi pointed to a wool blazer. It was charcoal.

“Don’t you have a charcoal jacket at home?” Maggie ran her fingers over some other jackets nearby.

“I do.”

“So why buy another one?”

“My jacket is old.”

“So? The dinner is only for two hours.”

“Right, but I don’t want Forsythia to see me looking run-down.”

Maggie turned away and Levi couldn’t see her face. He stepped toward her. She blinked. Were those tears in her eyes?

“Are you bored?” Levi asked. “Was that a yawn I detected?”

“No.” Maggie sniffled.

“Coming down with a cold?” Levi leaned toward her face.
