Maggie stepped back. Started checking the labels and tags on a row of sport coats. Then she pulled a black-and-cream herringbone sport coat off the rack. “How about this? You don’t have one in this color and this might make you stand out.”

Levi wasn’t sure if he wanted to stand out. He just wanted to get a date with Forsythia.

“If you think that will help me, Matchmaker Maggie.” Levi took the jacket from her. “Is this my size?”

“Yes.”

“You know me well. I’ll go try it on.” Levi looked around for signs of the fitting rooms.

“Wait. You need to pair it with something. A vest or a nice sweater.”

“Let’s do a vest. What color do you think I should wear?” Levi followed her to a row of vests.

“Burgundy looks good.” She picked one his size and lifted the vest against the coat that Levi held.

“Nice.” Levi smiled. “Again, you know me well, Maggie. You know my favorite color, my size, and what works well together.”

“You can thank Malachi for that. I had to help him shop too.”

Levi wondered if Maggie had helped more men than just her brother and himself. He didn’t want to ask. They didn’t have much time for chit-chatting.

“Oh wait.” Maggie’s eyes widened as she showed Levi the price tag. “This vest is pure cashmere and costs three hundred dollars.”

“It’s all right.”

“You’re dipping into your savings just to get dressed up for Saturday? What if she says no?”

“I hope she says yes to lunch with me.”

Maggie didn’t reply to that. “You’re also going to need some sort of shirt to go inside the vest. Maybe just wear one of your buttoned-down shirts? And jeans? Then you’ll save money.”

Levi nodded. “Good idea, Mags. I need to have something left over to pay for lunch with her.”

Maggie looked away again.

What’s the matter with this woman?

Maggie pointed toward a sign on the wall. “Fitting rooms are over there. I’ll wait.”

“Where?”

“I guess I’ll go to the women’s section and look around.”

“I’ll find you there.”

On the way to the fitting rooms, Levi picked up a couple of new dress shirts to try out. Yeah, he had a lot of shirts at home, but he wanted new clothes. He decided to get a new pair ofjeans too. He wasn’t too picky about jeans, as long as they were stretchable.

Maybe wearing all new clothes was an overkill, but he really wanted to look good on Saturday. If he couldn’t talk to Forsythia and make any progress with her, then he’d be out something like fifteen hundred dollars.

He walked out of the stall fully dressed in his new attire. He wanted to show Maggie how he looked.

He found her in the women’s section, staring at a full-length plaid skirt. She gasped at the price tag.

“You like it?” Levi asked.

“Not the price.” Maggie stepped back, not looking at him. Levi felt warm thinking that Maggie recognized his voice. “I need to save money for the m… Ah, I can’t spend it.”

“Save money for what?” Levi asked.
